The argument for turning the card sideways is width. A standard CR80 card measures 85.6mm by 54mm, so landscape gives a printed name the full 85.6mm instead of 54mm — enough for a long name, a two-line designation or a department line beneath it without shrinking the type. On a plant floor or at an exhibition counter in KL, that is the difference between a pass that is read at a glance and one that has to be lifted and peered at. Because the D-ring sits at the centre of the long edge rather than on a narrow top, the holder also hangs flat and spins less than the portrait version.
