Printing a Logo on a Golf Ball: What the Dimples Do to Your Artwork

A golf ball is the most hostile printing surface in the corporate gift catalogue. It is spherical, so nothing lies flat against it. It is covered in several hundred deliberate craters, each around a quarter of a millimetre deep, in a pattern the rules of golf require to be symmetrical. And it arrives at the printer with a film of mould-release agent still on it — the invisible substance behind more logo failures than any ink.

Marketing teams send us the same corporate logo that printed beautifully on their pens, notebooks and bottles, and are genuinely surprised when we ask for a redrawn version. This article explains why, walks through the pad-printing sequence step by step, and gives you the pre-approval checklist our production team runs before a ball order goes to bulk.

The short version

Pad printing lays ink onto a curved, dimpled surface using a soft silicone pad. Solid shapes and bold strokes survive that journey. Hairlines, tiny text, gradients and tight multi-colour registration do not. The fix is a simplified one- or two-colour version of your logo, drawn specifically for a ball — and an adhesion test on the actual ball you are buying, before you approve the run.

What you are actually printing on

Under the equipment rules published by the R&A and the USGA, a conforming ball must be at least 42.67 mm in diameter, must not weigh more than 45.93 g, and must carry a symmetrical dimple pattern. Those dimples are aerodynamic engineering, not decoration — typically in the region of 250 microns deep — and nothing about the printing process is allowed to change them.

The cover material matters just as much. Most promotional balls use an ionomer cover — often called by the Surlyn trade name — while tour-style balls use urethane. They hold ink differently, so a print approved on one cover tells you almost nothing about the other. If the ball model changes mid-project, the print approval has to be redone.

The two problems, separately

Curvature distorts the image: a flat artwork wrapped onto a sphere stretches at the edges. Dimples interrupt the image: the ink has to bridge across small craters, and thin lines can drop into them. These are two independent problems with two different fixes, and a supplier who only mentions one of them has not thought about the other.

How a logo actually gets onto a ball, step by step

Pad printing is an indirect process. Ink never travels from plate to ball directly; it detours via a soft pad, and that detour is what makes printing on a sphere possible.

  1. The plate is etched. Your artwork becomes a shallow recess in a steel or polymer plate, one plate per colour. The etch depth controls how much ink the image can hold.
  2. Ink floods the recess. A sealed cup travels across the plate, filling the etched image and scraping the surface clean, so ink sits only in the recess.
  3. The silicone pad picks the image up. A soft pad presses onto the plate and lifts the ink film out. Silicone is used because it releases ink well and, crucially, because it deforms.
  4. The pad rolls the image onto the ball. The ball sits in a fixture — a machined cradle holding it at exactly the right height and orientation — and the pad squashes down over the curve, depositing ink as it conforms.
  5. The ink is cured. Depending on the ink system, that means air-drying, heat or a UV pass.
  6. Repeat for each additional colour. A second colour means a second plate, a second pad, a second pass and re-registration on a surface that is round.

Step 4 is where the sphere earns its reputation. As the pad flattens over the ball, the outer parts of the image travel further than the centre. That distortion is compensated for by pre-distorting the plate artwork — which is why the file we print is never quite the file you send.

What breaks, and what to do about it

This is the table we would hand every marketing manager before they brief a designer: the artwork feature, what the dimpled sphere does to it, and the fix that keeps the brand recognisable.

One colour, or four? The honest trade-off

Pad printing on golf balls routinely handles one to four colours, and marketing teams almost always want all four because that is what the brand guidelines specify. Here is what each additional colour genuinely costs you, beyond the quotation.

  • Another plate and another set-up. Each colour needs its own etched plate and machine set-up, landing at the front end of the schedule.
  • Another registration risk. Registration on a sphere held in a cradle is less forgiving than on a flat panel. More colours, more chances of visible misalignment.
  • Drying time between passes. Colours cannot be stacked wet; each pass needs its cure, which adds real hours across several thousand balls.
  • A longer approval loop. A four-colour ball sample takes longer to produce and longer to assess, and it is the one artwork approval most likely to bounce — which is exactly the kind of delay that eats into the artwork deadline that decides whether the balls arrive.

Our recommendation for tournament work is almost always a one- or two-colour lockup. On a white ball, seen from a metre away, in sunlight, a bold single-colour mark reads better than a faithful four-colour reproduction — and it survives being scuffed by a bunker. It is the reason most of the logo golf balls printed to your artwork that leave our floor carry a simplified mark rather than the full corporate lockup.

Where the logo goes, and how big it can be

The usable print zone is the flattest area you can find on a sphere — the region around the pole, where the manufacturer’s own branding sits. Move outward and curvature distortion rises sharply, which is the real constraint on logo size rather than any published dimension. Practically, that means three things:

  • A roughly square or circular logo uses the print zone far better than a long horizontal wordmark. If your brand mark is wide and thin, ask your designer for a stacked version specifically for the ball.
  • You are usually sharing the ball with the manufacturer’s own mark and the ball’s model number. Agree the placement on the mockup, not by assumption.
  • If two logos must appear — host and sponsor — consider one on each pole rather than crowding both into a single zone.

The same discipline applies to the tees that accompany them. Printed wooden tees come in a few standard lengths — 54 mm, 70 mm and 83 mm are the common ones — and the printable area is a narrow band on the shaft: a one-colour, one-word surface. In a boxed set the tee carries the simplest version of the same lockup, which is part of packing printed balls into a boxed set so the whole thing reads as one piece.

Adhesion: the failure nobody sees coming

A logo that looks perfect on the sample and lifts off in the recipient’s bag is not an ink problem, it is a surface problem. Golf ball covers leave the mould carrying a residue of mould-release agent, and if it is not removed the ink bonds to the residue rather than to the ball. Surface preparation is the difference between a print that lasts a season and one that fails in a week.

Ask for this to be verified rather than promised. The standard laboratory methods for checking whether a coating adheres are the cross-cut test in ISO 2409 and the tape adhesion tests in ASTM D3359. Ask whether adhesion was checked on the exact cover material you are buying — ionomer and urethane must be validated separately.

A test you can run yourself in thirty seconds

Press a strip of ordinary clear adhesive tape firmly over the printed logo on your pre-production sample, leave it a few seconds, then pull it off in one movement at a sharp angle. Rub the logo hard with your thumb for ten seconds. If ink transfers to either, raise it before bulk production — that is a surface preparation issue, and it gets worse at volume.

The eight-point ball print checklist

Run this before you sign off. It takes ten minutes and it is the difference between a mockup approval and a genuine approval.

  1. Artwork supplied as vector, with fonts outlined and colours specified as named spot references, not as screen values.
  2. A ball-specific simplified lockup exists — no tagline, no hairlines, no gradient.
  3. Colour count agreed and locked, with the schedule implications understood.
  4. Placement agreed on the mockup relative to the manufacturer’s own marking.
  5. Sample printed on the exact ball model and cover material you are buying.
  6. Sample photographed close up, so edge quality can be judged rather than guessed at from a phone snap.
  7. Tape-and-thumb adhesion check passed on the sample.
  8. Packaging decided at the same time — sleeve, two-ball pack or box — because the pack artwork has its own approval cycle and the two must match.

Item eight catches experienced buyers. Ball print and pack print are separate production paths that must meet on the same day, and their quantities are counted differently — worth reconciling early against how many sleeves a full field actually consumes.

Frequently asked questions

Can you print a full-colour logo on a golf ball?

Pad printing handles up to four spot colours, each a separate pass with curing in between. What it does not do well is photographic imagery, gradients or fine tonal detail, because the dimple pattern disrupts halftone structures. If your logo depends on a gradient, we will suggest a flattened spot-colour version.

Why does my logo look different on the ball than on my other gifts?

Because the artwork is pre-distorted to compensate for the curve, and thin elements are thickened so they survive the dimples. A ball lockup is a variant of your logo, not a reproduction — best signed off by your designer in advance rather than improvised at the factory.

Will the printing affect how the ball flies?

A correctly applied pad print is a very thin ink film in the print zone and is not intended to alter the dimple geometry that governs flight. Heavy, uncontrolled coatings are a different matter — one more reason to approve a physical sample rather than a rendering.

What artwork format should I send?

Vector, with text converted to outlines and colours given as named spot references. If all you have is a raster file, send the largest clean version you own and we will advise whether it can be redrawn. A logo lifted from a website is rarely usable.
