Why Padel Rackets Have Holes: Perforation Patterns, the Sweet Spot and Where Your Logo Can Sit

The most common artwork correction our production team sends back on a padel job has nothing to do with colour or resolution. It is a logo drawn straight across a drill hole. The buyer sees a flat oval canvas and lays the wordmark across the middle of it, exactly as they would on a mousepad. The factory sees a perforated composite panel full of cylindrical voids, most of them clustered precisely where that wordmark was going to sit.

Those holes are not decoration, and they are not a styling flourish a factory can shuffle around to suit your logo. They are load-bearing engineering, they are written into the international rulebook, and they decide — before anyone opens a design file — where your branding can legibly live. Here is what the perforation pattern actually does, what the rules permit, what the marketing claims get wrong, and how to read a racket face in about a minute so you can approve artwork with confidence instead of hope.

The short version. Holes remove mass, control how the face flexes and spread impact stress so the panel does not crack. Their diameter and placement are regulated, and where they cluster changes how forgiving the racket feels off-centre. The practical branding rule: put the detail where the holes are not.

A padel racket is a drilled panel, not a strung frame

Almost every branding mistake starts with thinking of the racket as something it is not. A padel racket has no strings. It is a stringless composite sandwich: two moulded faces bonded to a foam core, wrapped in a one-piece frame, with a short handle and a safety cord. The hitting surface is a rigid panel — and a panel of that area and thickness would be far too heavy and far too stiff to swing if you left it solid.

Drilling solves three problems at once. It removes material, bringing the racket into a playable mass. It lets the face flex on contact rather than behaving like a board, which is what gives the racket its feel. And it spreads the stresses of impact through the panel instead of concentrating them, reducing the risk of cracks spreading from a single hard hit. Take the holes away and you do not get a better racket; you get a heavy, harsh one that fails early. That is why no factory will fill in a row of holes so a logo reads better. It also explains why the racket has a thick edge rather than a thin rim, and why the parts that meet the glass wall are built quite differently from the face — the subject of our look at the bumper and grip that take the wall strikes. For now, keep the mental model: drilled panel, foam inside, frame around.

What the rulebook actually specifies

The International Padel Federation describes the racket in physical terms rather than leaving it to manufacturers. The figures below set the outer boundary of the canvas you are designing on.

Read that table once and the design brief writes itself. The face is a fixed-size oval with dozens of 9–13 mm voids through the middle and a less predictable band around the outside. That is not a poster. It is closer to a perforated metal sign, and it wants the same discipline: big shapes, strong contrast, no hairlines.

The aerodynamics claim, and why we do not lead with it

You will often be told the holes are there so air passes through the face and the racket swings faster. It is partly true — a drilled panel meets less resistance than a solid one — but it is oversold. At real playing speeds the aerodynamic contribution of the hole pattern is small compared with total mass, balance point and swing weight. Two rackets with identical patterns and a thirty-gram weight difference feel worlds apart; two rackets of identical weight and balance with different patterns feel far more alike than the marketing suggests.

This matters because it changes how a corporate buyer evaluates a sample. If you believe more holes equals more speed, you will choose on hole count, which is close to meaningless. Understand that the pattern is primarily about mass removal, face flex and stress distribution, and you will choose on the things that genuinely change how the racket plays — weight, balance and what is inside the sandwich. That is the same hierarchy we use when advising on custom padel rackets in Malaysia for a club order.

Buyer’s tip. If a supplier’s first answer to “why is this racket good” is the hole count, ask for weight and balance instead. If they cannot tell you either, you are looking at a catalogue photograph rather than a product.

How hole placement moves the sweet spot

What genuinely matters is distribution, not quantity. Holes are the places the panel is free to deform, so wherever they cluster the face flexes more, and wherever they thin out the face stays stiff. That is the mechanism behind the sweet spot — the region where the face gives back energy predictably and the shot does not feel dead or jarring.

A dense, tightly grouped central pattern concentrates the responsive area into a smaller, defined zone; players with clean, repeatable contact love it because the racket rewards precision. A pattern spread more evenly outward widens that area toward the edges, which is far more forgiving on off-centre contact — the normal condition for anyone who picked up a racket an hour ago. Hole diameter reinforces the trend: smaller holes leave more material and a stiffer face, larger holes leave a more elastic one.

This is why the pattern can never be judged on its own. The same drilled face bonded to a different foam behaves like a different racket, which is the point we make when explaining how EVA core density changes the feel of an otherwise identical racket. Face and core are one system.

The four zones of a padel face — our branding map

Because the drilling is fixed by engineering, we work the other way round: map the face into four zones, then place artwork according to what each zone can physically hold. This is the framework our team uses on every padel mockup.

The rule that falls out of this map is the one we repeat most often: the loudest part of your design belongs in the drilled heart, and the most legible part belongs on the throat shelf. Buyers instinctively do the opposite. Swap those two and the racket reads correctly from across a court, which is where it will actually be seen.

Read a face pattern in sixty seconds

Run this over the racket photograph or the sample in your hand before approving a mockup. It catches nearly everything that goes wrong later.

  1. Find the densest cluster. Hold the racket up to a window. The area where light floods through is where nothing small will survive. Anything you need to read must not be there.
  2. Measure your thinnest stroke against a hole. Central holes run roughly 9–13 mm. If a letter stem, a rule line or a tagline character is thinner than a hole is wide, a single unlucky hole can break it in half.
  3. Check the throat. Is there an undrilled patch above the handle? Its size is your real logo area.
  4. Look at the outer band. Larger or differently shaped holes near the edge mean your design should be bleeding colour out there, not carrying information.
  5. Turn it over. Both faces are branding surfaces. Many organisations waste the reverse entirely, when it is the side a spectator sees while the player is at the net.

Artwork specs that survive a drilled face

Send vector, always

Every hole edge is a place where softness in a raster file shows as a fringe. Vector outlines with fonts converted to curves let us move elements around the perforations without redrawing.

Design for contrast, not for detail

A racket is read at speed, from ten or more metres away, while moving. Two strong colours and one shape beat a faithful reproduction of a complex mark every time. If your logo has an outline version and a solid version, the solid one belongs on the face.

Leave the mark a margin

Keep clear space around any element that must stay intact, so a small shift in alignment between print and drilling cannot clip it. Elements pushed hard against a perforation are the ones that come back looking wrong.

One point that only appears once you have shipped racket-sports gear: brand colours behave differently on a perforated surface. Light passes through the holes, so a mid-tone face reads lighter on court than on your screen. If your brand colour is already pale, take it a shade deeper than you would on a shirt — the same lesson applies to a pickleball paddle, one of the few things the two products genuinely share.

Perforation questions we get asked

Can the holes be moved or removed so my logo fits?

No. The layout belongs to the mould and to the structural design of the face. Removing holes would change the racket’s weight, stiffness and durability, and could take it outside the equipment rules. The design has to work with the pattern — entirely achievable once you know where the undrilled areas are.

Does the whole racket face carry artwork?

Yes — full-colour printing covers the face, and the frame, grip and cover can carry branding too. The area is not small; it is interrupted, so the design has to be built for interruption.

Should both faces have the same design?

Not necessarily. A bold graphic on one side and a cleaner side carrying the logo and event name works well. Players see one face, everyone else sees the other.
