The reason to pick smooth over pebbled is almost entirely about the logo. Debossing presses your mark into the leather rather than printing on top of it, so what you see is the shadow in the recess. On a pebbled hide that shadow competes with the grain, and fine detail — thin serifs, a tagline under a wordmark, anything below about 4mm — muddies. A smooth panel has nothing to compete with, so the same artwork reads cleanly. The trade is durability: pebbled grain hides scuffs and fingerprints far better, which is why the lychee-grain version suits daily staff passes while this one suits the gift box.

One note on orientation: this holder is portrait, which suits cards printed with the name running down the card. If your access cards or exhibition badges are printed sideways, the horizontal version uses the same smooth panel and gives the name the card's full 85.6mm of width.
