Designing custom socks for the first time? The quality of your finished product depends heavily on how you prepare your artwork. This guide walks you through the exact file formats, colour specifications, sizing, and design do’s and don’ts so your customised socks Malaysia order comes out exactly as you envisioned.

File Format Requirements

The file format you supply determines the sharpness and accuracy of your final printed socks. Here is what we accept, ranked from best to acceptable:

Format Type Quality Notes
.AI (Adobe Illustrator) Vector Best Scales to any size without losing quality. Preferred for all methods.
.EPS / .SVG Vector Best Universal vector formats. Ensure fonts are outlined/converted to curves.
.PDF (vector) Vector Best Must be exported from a vector program (Illustrator, CorelDRAW). Not a scanned PDF.
.PNG (300+ DPI) Raster Good Transparent background required. Minimum 300 DPI at actual print size.
.JPG / .JPEG Raster Acceptable Minimum 300 DPI. White background may need manual removal. Compression artefacts visible at large sizes.
Low-res screenshot / Word doc logo Raster Poor Will appear blurry when printed. Our team can redraw it — just ask.

Common mistake: Many clients send a small logo pulled from their website (72 DPI). This looks fine on screen but will appear pixelated on fabric. Always use the original high-resolution logo file from your design team or brand guidelines document.

Colour Specifications & Matching

Colour accuracy matters — especially when your brand guidelines specify exact shades. Here is how to ensure your customised socks KL order matches your brand colours:

Pantone (PMS) Colours — The Gold Standard

If your brand guide specifies Pantone codes (e.g., PMS 286 C for a specific blue), always provide these. Pantone ensures consistent colour reproduction across different production batches and methods. This is particularly important for jacquard socks where yarn colours are selected to match your Pantone reference.

CMYK for Sublimation

Sublimation printing uses CMYK ink (Cyan, Magenta, Yellow, Black). If you supply your design in RGB colour mode (the default for most digital artwork), colours may shift when converted. To prevent this, either supply your file in CMYK mode or provide Pantone codes so we can convert accurately.

Important Colour Notes

  • Fabric absorbs ink differently than paper. Expect slight variation from what you see on screen — this is normal for all textile printing.
  • Neon and fluorescent colours do not reproduce accurately with standard sublimation or jacquard. Ask us about special yarn options if you require these.
  • Dark sock base colours work well with jacquard but poorly with sublimation (the ink needs a light base to show through).
  • If exact colour matching is critical, request a pre-production sample before full production. Learn more about the production process in our guide to how custom socks are made.

Logo Placement & Print Areas

Where your logo sits on the sock affects visibility, aesthetics, and production complexity. Here are the standard placement zones:

Outer Calf

Most visible when standing. The #1 choice for custom logo socks intended as corporate gifts and branded merchandise.

Ankle Area

Visible when sitting or crossing legs. Works well for ankle and crew socks. Good for secondary logos or event dates.

Sole / Bottom

Hidden when worn with shoes. A fun \”surprise\” placement. Popular for hotel amenities and quirky brand reveals.

Cuff / Top Band

Small area ideal for embroidered initials or small icons. Gives a premium, understated look. Popular for executive gifts.

All-Over Print

Full-sock coverage from toe to cuff. Sublimation only. Maximum creative impact for event merchandise and retail products.

Design Do’s and Don’ts

✓ Do

  • Use vector files whenever possible
  • Provide Pantone codes for brand colours
  • Keep text at 8mm height or larger
  • Add 3–5mm bleed area around edge artwork
  • Outline all fonts before sending (convert to curves)
  • Use high-contrast colours for logos on the calf area
  • Test your design at actual sock size to check legibility

✗ Don’t

  • Send logos pulled from websites (72 DPI)
  • Use thin hairline text or fine serif fonts
  • Expect neon/fluorescent colours to print accurately
  • Design in RGB if the socks are sublimation-printed
  • Place critical design elements at the very toe or heel seam
  • Use more than 8 colours for jacquard designs
  • Assume screen colours match fabric colours exactly

Design Tips by Printing Method

Each production method has specific artwork requirements. Tailoring your design to the method avoids delays and ensures the best result. For a full breakdown of each method, see How Custom Socks Are Made.

For Sublimation

  • Supply artwork in CMYK colour mode at 300 DPI
  • Design on a white or light background — dark base socks are not suitable
  • Extend artwork 5mm beyond the print area to prevent white borders
  • Gradients and photographs reproduce well — take advantage of the unlimited colour capability

For Jacquard

  • Limit your design to 6–8 flat colours maximum
  • Simplify logos by removing small details that will not resolve in knitted yarn
  • Avoid gradients — use solid colour blocks instead
  • Minimum text height is approximately 10mm for legibility in knit

For Embroidery

  • Keep the design to a maximum of 4cm x 4cm for socks
  • Use solid shapes and thick lines — thin details do not embroider cleanly
  • Limit to 1–3 thread colours for the neatest result

What If You Do Not Have a Design?

Many of our B2B clients come to us with nothing more than a logo and a rough idea. That is completely fine. Here is what we need from you:

  1. Your company logo (in the best quality file you have — even a JPG is a starting point)
  2. Preferred sock colour(s) and style (crew, ankle, sport, no-show)
  3. The purpose of the socks (corporate gift, event merchandise, staff uniforms — this helps us design appropriately)
  4. Any text you want included (company name, event date, tagline)

Our design team will create 2–3 mockup options for your review within 2 business days, completely free of charge. You choose the one you like and we refine it until you are happy. If you are ordering customised socks for a corporate gift project, we can suggest packaging options to match.

Frequently Asked Questions

What DPI should my artwork be for custom sock printing?

Minimum 300 DPI at actual print size. Vector files (AI, EPS, SVG, PDF) are resolution-independent and always preferred. For sublimation, higher DPI means sharper detail — especially for photographic designs.

Can you recreate my logo if I only have a low-resolution version?

Yes. Our design team can redraw most logos from a low-resolution source file. There may be a small fee for complex logo recreation, but for simple logos it is usually included.

How many design revisions do I get?

We include unlimited mockup revisions until you are completely satisfied — at no additional cost. Most clients approve within 1–2 rounds.

Do I own the design after it is created?

Yes. All custom designs we create for your order are yours. We will not reuse your company logo or bespoke artwork for any other client.
