Your Photo at 50mm: What a Round Badge Does to Faces, Gradients and Skin Tone

A photo badge almost never fails because the file was too small. It fails because the face in the file was too small — occupying a tenth of a frame that then gets cropped to a circle, wrapped around a metal rim and finished at about 42mm across. Resolution is the thing everybody worries about. Subject size is the thing that actually goes wrong.

A flat logo is forgiving on a badge. It is a handful of solid colours, it can be scaled without loss, and the outer ring of the design that disappears into the crimp costs you nothing but background. A photograph is the opposite of all three. Every square millimetre carries information, so every millimetre lost is content lost; you cannot invent more sky to fill a bleed; and continuous tone under a clear film behaves in ways that flat brand colours simply do not.

This is what our production team checks before a photographic badge goes to print — the arithmetic that tells you whether an image is usable, how a circular canvas treats a face, what the film does to colour, and the proof checks that have to happen on a pressed badge rather than on a screen. It is the difference between photo badge printing KL that people keep and a box of badges that quietly does not get handed out.

The resolution arithmetic, and why it is the easy part

Print at 300 dpi means roughly 11.8 pixels per millimetre. The image has to cover the full cut circle, not just the visible badge, because the outer ring wraps around the shell — that is the wrap ring that eats the outside of your image, and on a photograph it is real content, not spare background.

Those numbers are lower than most people expect, and that is the trap. A badge really does not need a large file, so nobody thinks twice about the image they send. The catch is in the middle column heading: those are pixels in the cropped image, after the photo has been cut down to the part that ends up on the badge. A 4000-pixel group photograph of a whole department is a huge file and a hopeless badge, because the crop you actually need out of it might be 280 pixels square.

The one check worth doing before you send anything. Crop the image to exactly what you want on the badge, save that crop as its own file, and look at its pixel dimensions. That number, not the original file size, is the number that decides whether the badge works. Screenshots, images pulled from social media and photos forwarded through a chat app are almost always already too small once cropped.

Subject size: the rule that actually matters

Forget pixels for a moment and think in millimetres of finished badge. On a 50mm badge you have about 42mm of flat, readable face. A badge is read at conversational distance and glanced at from across a room.

Working rule: a face must occupy at least a third of the badge’s readable diameter to be recognisable. On a 50mm badge that is around 14mm of face — head and shoulders, cropped close, nothing else in shot. Two people on a 50mm badge gives you two 7mm faces, which is a badge showing that two people exist. A group of five is a texture.

  • One person, tightly cropped: works at 44mm and above, and is the only photographic subject we would recommend at 32mm.
  • Two people: 58mm or 75mm, shoulder to shoulder, and only if the shot was framed that way to begin with.
  • A group, a building, a landscape, a product on a shelf: these need the badge to be bought as a picture rather than as a message. They can look lovely and they will not be read.
  • A photograph plus a name: budget a third of the circle for the name and crop the picture accordingly, rather than discovering at proof stage that the text is sitting on somebody’s chin.

What a circle does to a photograph

Every photograph you own was framed as a rectangle. A round badge takes the corners away, and it does it in the two places a portrait can least afford — above the head and at the shoulders, simultaneously.

  • The circle crops diagonally. A head-and-shoulders shot that sits comfortably in a square loses the outer shoulders and the top of the hair at the same time in a circle. Crop for the circle from the start, not for a square you will then round off.
  • Off-centre reads as an error. On a rectangle, an off-centre subject is composition. On a circle, the rim is a continuous reference line, and the eye measures the subject against it all the way round. Photographic badges want the subject centred and symmetrical in a way that would look dull in a frame.
  • Put the eye line on the horizontal centre, or just above it. The instinct is to leave headroom, which drops the eyes into the lower half. Eyes are what a viewer reads. Headroom is what the crimp takes.
  • Anything at the rim of the picture is on the curve. A shoulder, a hand or an elbow that reaches the badge edge will bend away around the shell and pick up the film’s highlight. Keep the whole subject inside the flat face.
  • Text over a photograph needs a solid plate. A drop shadow separates type from a background on a screen. Under a gloss film, the highlight lands on exactly the area the shadow was meant to darken. Use a solid bar, a strong scrim or a plain area of the image, and the type will survive.

Gradients, skin tone and what the film does to colour

Two changes happen between the file you approved and the badge in your hand, and neither is a mistake.

Gradients and large flat tints

A smooth gradient looks luxurious on a screen and is one of the riskiest things to put on a badge face. Spread across a 42mm circle the tonal steps are compressed into a very short distance, so banding shows as faint rings — and on a round badge those rings run parallel to the rim, which is exactly where the eye is already travelling. A little grain, or an honest flat colour, survives the press far better than a gentle blend.

From screen to paper

Your screen makes colour with light; the insert makes it with four process inks on coated paper. The saturated blues, oranges and greens a monitor shows are simply outside what process printing can reach. Deep navy tends to close up towards purple, bright orange flattens, and mid-greens shift. On a logo you notice this and adjust. Inside a photograph you cannot isolate one colour without moving everything around it.

Skin is the least forgiving subject in printing. Skin tones sit in a narrow band of cyan, magenta and yellow, and small movements read as health rather than as colour. A touch more cyan and a face looks grey and unwell; a touch more magenta and it looks sunburnt. A shift that would be invisible on a corporate blue is immediately obvious on a face, which is why photographic badges need a physical proof and flat-colour badges often do not.

From paper to badge

Then the mylar goes over the top, and it is not neutral. A gloss film deepens shadows and lifts apparent saturation — the wet-look effect. A matte film scatters light across the surface, so blacks lighten, contrast drops and saturation mutes. The same file finished in gloss and in matte are visibly two different badges, and the difference is larger on a photograph than on flat artwork because a photograph depends on its shadow detail.

Start from gloss for photographic work, because photographs need the contrast, and reserve matte for artwork that is flat, pale or deliberately understated. If the finish is undecided, ask for the proof both ways — same artwork, pressed twice. Which film you choose also matters for how the badge ages, and what the mylar film and the crimp are doing to that print is worth reading before signing off a finish.

Proofing a photo badge: seven checks, and none of them on a screen

A photographic badge is the one product where a digital mockup genuinely cannot answer the question. Ask for a pressed proof and work through this.

  1. Insist it is pressed, not printed flat. A flat sheet tells you nothing about the film, the curve or the wrap. Half the effects on this list only exist on a finished badge.
  2. Get gloss and matte together if the finish is open. Two badges, same file.
  3. Look at skin tone in daylight, near a window. Then look again under the warm indoor lighting of the room the badge will be worn in. Colours that agree under one light and disagree under another are a genuine, and fixable, problem.
  4. Check the darkest area for detail. A dark suit against a dark background merges into one shape on paper far more readily than on a backlit screen.
  5. Rake the badge under a light and inspect the rim. Confirm that nothing you cared about has gone over the curve, and that no crescent of the picture has been lost into the crimp.
  6. Read it twice: at arm’s length, then from two metres. A badge is inspected close up once and read at a distance for the rest of its life. If the face is unrecognisable at two metres, the crop is too wide.
  7. Compare against physical references, not a screen. And accept the honest limitation: a photograph is printed in process colour, so an exact spot-colour brand match is only possible in the flat areas around the picture, never inside it.
Send these three things and the proof usually passes first time. The cropped image at final aspect, as its own file at the pixel size in the table above. A note saying which single element must be recognisable — the face, the name, the mark. And the finish you are leaning towards, gloss or matte. What resolution do I need for a photo button badge?

Roughly 730 pixels square for a 50mm badge at 300 dpi, measured on the cropped image rather than the original. We would ask for around 1200 pixels square so there is room to reposition the crop without losing quality.

Can every badge in the order carry a different photograph?

Yes — individually personalised inserts are normal on staff and student badges. What it changes is the artwork handling: a named, correctly cropped file per person and a checked name list, supplied together in one batch. Getting that list right is the part that takes the time, not the printing.

Why does my badge look darker than the photo on my laptop?

Because a screen emits light and a badge reflects it, and because a gloss film deepens the shadows further. A photograph that is already dark on screen will be noticeably darker on a badge. Lift the midtones slightly before you send the file rather than after you see the proof.
