Custom Tingkat Container Steel Grades: How to Choose Between 304 and 201

“Stainless steel” on a tingkat quotation is a category, not a specification. It covers several grades, and they sit at different price points for good reasons. Knowing which one you are buying is what lets you compare two quotes properly, match the container to how it will actually be used, and explain the choice confidently to whoever signs off the budget.

This guide sets out what the grades are, what each one is well suited to, how to confirm what you are being offered, and what “food grade” does and does not tell you. 304 and 201: what actually differs

Both are austenitic stainless steels and both are used widely in food containers. The difference is in the alloy — principally the nickel content, which is the main driver of corrosion resistance and of cost.

Both are food-safe. This is not a safety comparison — it is a longevity-and-budget one. 201 is widely and legitimately used in kitchenware, and for a great many gifting programmes it is exactly the right call. What matters is that you know which one is in the quotation, because a 304 quote and a 201 quote are not comparing the same product, and a price gap between two suppliers often turns out to be a grade gap.

Choosing between them

The honest way to decide is to start from how the container will be treated, not from which grade sounds better.

A useful way to think about it: 201 lets you put budget somewhere else on the same order. On a large festive run, choosing 201 and spending the difference on an insulated build, a nicer finish or proper gift packaging often produces a gift recipients rate more highly than the same money spent invisibly on alloy.

Confirming what you are being offered

You cannot tell the grades apart by eye, so it is worth asking directly — not because either answer is wrong, but because you need to know which product you are comparing.

  1. Ask in writing. “Is the food-contact body 304 or 201?” Any supplier should answer plainly, and the answer belongs in the quotation rather than in a conversation.
  2. The magnet check, with a caveat. 304 is generally non-magnetic or weakly magnetic; 201 tends to be more magnetic. It is an indicator rather than proof — pressing and forming can make 304 slightly magnetic at edges — so treat it as a prompt to ask, not a conclusion.
  3. Request a mill certificate for orders of size. A supplier working with a stated grade can produce documentation for it.
  4. Ask about clips, latches and rim bands. Some builds use one grade for the body and another for hardware. Neither is wrong, but “304 body” and “304 throughout” are different specifications and should be priced as such.

What “food grade” actually means

It is the most reassuring phrase on any kitchenware quotation and the least specific. Food grade means a material is suitable for food contact. It does not identify the alloy, and it does not describe service life.

  • Both 304 and 201 can accurately be described as food grade. The phrase therefore does not answer the question you are actually asking, which is which alloy is in the quote.
  • On enamel or coated bodies the finish is the food-contact surface, so ask what the coating is and confirm it is lead-free and cadmium-free.
  • Gaskets and lid components are sourced separately from the steel — confirm silicone and any plastic parts are BPA-free.
  • Keep decoration off food-contact surfaces as a matter of course — see which branding survives the dishwasher.

Gauge: the specification that sits next to grade

Grade tells you what the steel is made of. Gauge tells you how much of it there is, and the two are independent — a thin container in a premium grade can still dent easily, which surprises buyers who have carefully specified the alloy and nothing else.

  • Thicker steel resists denting and warping, particularly at the rim where the lid seats. A warped rim is the usual reason a container stops sealing well.
  • It feels better in the hand, which matters disproportionately for a gift judged in its first few seconds.
  • The trade-off is weight and cost, so this is a genuine balance rather than more-is-better.
  • Ask for it in millimetres, and ask whether the lid matches the body — lids are a common place to economise, and the lid takes the knocks.

Enamel, and where it differs

Enamel tingkat are a different proposition: a steel core with a fused glass coating. That coating is inert and food-safe, and it is why enamel has been trusted for generations.

  • The coating is the whole story. Intact, it performs excellently. Chipped, the base metal beneath is exposed and a chip cannot be repaired.
  • It is less forgiving of impact than stainless, so for a container carried daily on a motorcycle, stainless is the safer specification.
  • Confirm lead-free and cadmium-free, particularly on coloured and decorative finishes.
  • It photographs beautifully, which is why enamel dominates festive and vintage-styled ranges.

Care guidance worth including

Whichever grade you choose, a short insert card protects the product and the brand printed on it. This matters a little more on 201, and it is good practice on both.

  1. Rinse soon after use, particularly after sambal, curry or anything acidic. Salt left sitting is harder on steel than the wash itself.
  2. Avoid steel wool and harsh abrasives, which scratch the passive layer that gives stainless its corrosion resistance.
  3. Dry before storing. In Malaysian humidity, a container put away damp and clamped shut is the least favourable condition for any grade.
  4. Store with the lid loose so air circulates and the gasket is not held compressed for weeks.
  5. Do not soak overnight — prolonged immersion is harder on both steel and gaskets than a prompt wash.
  6. Keep it out of the microwave. Worth stating explicitly, because people try.

What to put in the purchase order

  1. Grade, stated explicitly — for example “304 stainless, food-contact body and rim” or “201 stainless body”.
  2. Whether clips, latches and brackets share that grade.
  3. Gasket and lid materials, confirmed BPA-free.
  4. Enamel composition if applicable, confirmed lead-free and cadmium-free.
  5. Steel thickness in millimetres, since grade and gauge are separate questions.
  6. Where branding sits, kept off food-contact surfaces.

Presenting the grade choice internally

If you are the person recommending a specification to a budget holder, the grade question is easier to explain than it looks — and explaining it well usually gets the order approved faster.

  • Frame it as service life against unit cost, not as good against bad. Both grades are food-safe and both are used widely; one simply carries a longer expected life in demanding conditions.
  • Put the difference in context of the whole order. On a large run, the gap between grades is often smaller than the gap between plain poly-bag packing and a proper gift box — and the packaging is what the recipient sees first.
  • Match the grade to the audience. A specification that is right for a hundred site workers is not automatically right for twenty board members, and there is no reason a single programme cannot use both.
  • Write the grade into the purchase order. Whatever you choose, having it stated means the next reorder can be matched exactly rather than reconstructed from memory.
