Where Wine Glasses Actually Break: The Stem, the Shoulder and the Rack

Wine glasses very rarely break because someone drops one. They break because someone holds the foot in one hand, pushes a folded cloth into the bowl with the other, and twists. That single movement — the tea-towel twist — has ended more stemware than every dropped tray in Malaysia put together, and it happens in the two minutes after the glass has already survived the wash.

This article is about the mechanical life of a stemmed glass: where the load actually goes, why one construction survives it and another does not, how to tell the two apart with your own eyes before you commit to an order, and what to write on a single card for the people who will be washing and drying these glasses long after your event is over. It is about the glass surviving — not about the logo surviving, which is a separate question with a separate answer.

A stem is a lever, and the joint is the fulcrum

Hold a stemmed glass by its foot and apply a sideways push to the rim. The force does not spread evenly through the glass. It concentrates at the narrowest cross-section on the load path — the place where the wide bowl necks down into the thin stem. That transition, usually only a few millimetres across, carries every twisting and bending load the glass will ever see.

Everything else follows from that. A longer stem is a longer lever, so it multiplies whatever force is applied at the bowl. A wider bowl is a bigger sail for a passing elbow. And a joint that was made in two pieces rather than one has an internal boundary sitting exactly where the stress peaks. Nobody breaks a wine glass in the middle of the stem. They break it at the shoulder.

Where the breaks are: in our experience of handling returned and damaged glassware, failures cluster in three places — the bowl-to-stem shoulder (twisting), the rim (contact with another glass or a tap), and the outer edge of the foot (chipped when the glass is set down hard or slid across a hard surface). The middle of the stem and the base of the bowl almost never fail on their own.

Pulled stem versus welded stem: the difference you can see

There are two ways to make a stemmed glass, and they are not equivalent.

Pulled (drawn) stem

The bowl, stem and foot are formed from one continuous mass of glass, with the stem literally drawn out of the bowl while the glass is still workable. There is no joint because there are no separate parts. The material runs uninterrupted through the shoulder, so a load applied at the rim passes through a continuous structure rather than across a boundary.

Welded (joined) stem

The bowl, the stem and sometimes the foot are made separately and fused together while hot. It is a legitimate and very common method — a great deal of attractive glassware is made this way, and it is the only practical route for certain decorative stems and coloured bodies. But the fused interface sits precisely where the bending stress peaks, and any small irregularity in that interface becomes the place the crack starts. When a joined glass fails, it usually fails cleanly at the shoulder, leaving a bowl and a stem-and-foot in two pieces.

You can usually tell which you are holding without asking anybody. Take the glass to a window and look through the shoulder against the light, turning it slowly. A joined stem tends to show a faint seam, a subtle change in optical density, or a ring of very slightly different thickness right at the transition. Then run a fingertip round the same area: a pulled stem feels like one continuous curve, while a joint often has a barely perceptible step or a slight flare where the two masses met. Neither observation is a laboratory test, but both take ten seconds and they will tell you what kind of glass is in your sample carton.

Put it in the brief, not in the conversation: if the glasses are going into weekly service at a venue, ask for a pulled or drawn stem in writing. If the design you have fallen in love with is a joined-stem body — a coloured stem, a decorative knop, a metallic finish — that is a perfectly reasonable choice for a keepsake, but budget for the fact that it is a gift glass rather than a service glass.

The foot: stability is a ratio, not a size

Buyers look at a foot and judge it as big or small. What actually determines whether a glass tips is the relationship between three numbers: the diameter of the foot, the widest diameter of the bowl, and the height of the whole glass. A glass is stable when the foot is at least as wide as the bowl at its widest point, and it becomes progressively easier to tip as the bowl overhangs the foot and as overall height increases.

There is a second effect people miss: a poured glass is more stable than an empty one, because the wine sits low in the bowl and drops the centre of gravity. The glasses that go over on a banquet table are usually the empty ones being cleared, or the nearly-empty ones at the end of the evening. If your event runs long, that matters.

Five checks, four minutes, one sample. Run them before you approve artwork, not after, because the body is far harder to change once decoration has been scheduled. The same sample session is the right moment to decide matching bowl volume to the pour, since foot and bowl have to be judged as one shape.

Why the rack, and not the water, is the danger

Almost everybody blames the machine. In practice the machine is the least eventful part of a glass’s week. The damage happens in the handling around it, and it is nearly always mechanical.

  • Loading into a flat rack. A stemmed glass in an open rack has nothing holding it upright. Push the rack, and the bowls swing and touch. Glass on glass is how rims chip.
  • The wrong rack entirely. Stemware needs a rack with individual compartments deep enough to hold the bowl, or a purpose-made stem rack that suspends the glass by its foot. Standing a tall stemmed glass in a shallow open rack is asking for it.
  • Stacking. Nested wine glasses jam. Freeing them means twisting, and twisting takes us straight back to the shoulder.
  • Drying. The tea-towel twist described at the top of this article. If the bowl is held and the foot is turned, the shoulder takes the whole torque.
  • Carrying. Four or five glasses gathered by the stems in one hand, bowls clinking together at every step.

None of that is about detergent, heat, or how the glass was decorated. It is about geometry meeting a busy service team. If you want to know how the mark itself behaves over time, that is a different mechanism — worth reading alongside the foot as a branding position, because a mark placed low is a mark that never meets a rack edge.

The handling brief: one card, six lines

  1. Carry by the stem or the foot, one glass per hand space. Never gather several bowls together.
  2. Use a compartment rack. Never let one bowl rest against another.
  3. Never stack or nest these glasses, even briefly.
  4. When drying, hold the bowl, not the foot, and never twist the two against each other.
  5. Set the glass down on the foot, flat, without sliding it across the table.
  6. Retire any glass with a chipped rim or foot immediately — a chip is a crack waiting for a reason.

Stemless is not a fashion, it is a different product

Stemless glasses are often dismissed as a trend. Read this article backwards and they look like an engineering decision: remove the stem and you remove the lever, the shoulder, the tipping overhang and the nesting problem in one move. A stemless bowl sits in a standard rack, survives a crowded pantry, tolerates being carried by people who are not trained service staff, and packs into a shorter box.

The trade is real and you should name it out loud. The hand touches the bowl, so the wine warms faster — which in our climate is not a trivial point for a white. Fingerprints show. And a stemless bowl cannot be swirled with the same control.
