Non-Woven Bag GSM: What 60, 75, 80, 90 and 100gsm Actually Survive

The bag that split at the pasar did not split across the panel. It split where the handle met the body — about 40 millimetres of stitching that gave way while the fabric either side of it was still perfectly intact. We have opened enough returned samples to say this plainly: in the great majority of non-woven bag failures we are asked to look at, the polypropylene web is the last thing to go, not the first. Yet almost every brief we receive argues about one number, GSM, and says nothing at all about the parts that actually break.

This is the GSM guide we wish buyers had before they specify: the weight bands and what each honestly survives, a way to verify the GSM you were quoted with a set of scales, and the three construction specs that matter more than the number on the quotation. What GSM actually measures — and how to check the number you were sold

GSM is grams per square metre. A one-metre by one-metre sheet of 90gsm non-woven weighs 90 grams. That is the whole definition. It is a measure of how much polypropylene is in the fabric, not a measure of strength, and definitely not a load rating.

Because it is a simple ratio, you can verify it yourself. Cut a clean rectangle from a sample — away from seams, handles and print — and weigh it on a jeweller’s scale reading to 0.01g. The table below does the arithmetic for two easy swatch sizes: a 20cm square, or a spare A4 sheet used as a template.

A4 is 0.06237 square metres and a 20cm square is 0.04 square metres — multiply either by the GSM to get the expected weight. Mill tolerance of roughly plus or minus five per cent is normal, so a 90gsm A4 swatch weighing 5.4g or 5.8g is within spec. A swatch weighing 4.7g is not 90gsm fabric.

The one-minute audit

If a sample arrives and something feels thin, weigh it before you complain. Turning “this feels flimsy” into “your 90gsm sample weighs 4.8g at A4, which computes to roughly 77gsm” changes the conversation entirely — and it is the fastest way we know for a buyer to find out whether the quotation and the sample describe the same fabric.

The weight bands, and what each one honestly survives

Here is the band-by-band view from twenty-plus years of shipping promotional bags — written the way we would explain it across a table, not the way catalogues write it.

75–80gsm The mass-giveaway workhorse: roadshow bags, gift-with-purchase carriers for light goods, sampling bags. Repeat use. It will make it through the event and a few shopping trips; it will not still look new after a month.
90gsm The corporate standard. Conference and delegate totes, A4 and A3 document bags, retail gift-with-purchase, branded carrier bags for clinics and pharmacies. Wet-market duty and litres of liquid. It carries a laptop-free document load comfortably; it is not a grocery bag.
100–110gsm Reusable shopping bags meant to survive a real weekly shop; bags carrying bottles, tins or hampers. Budget and bulk. Heavier fabric costs more per bag and folds less flat, which raises your freight and storage volume.
120gsm and above, or laminated Premium campaign bags, wipe-clean surfaces, full-colour photographic artwork, hamper carriers meant to be kept. One-day events. Paying for 120gsm on a bag that is used once and binned is the most common overspend we see.

For a reference point you can check against a real product rather than a generic chart: the A4 non-woven tote in our own range is 90gsm, fully stitched, 26cm x 9cm x 33cm and weighs about 30 grams as a finished bag, with a 20cm x 28cm print area. The A3 version is also 90gsm but 42cm x 10cm x 38cm, about 60 grams, with a 36cm x 32cm print area. Same fabric weight, twice the finished bag weight — which is another reminder that GSM tells you about the cloth, not about the bag.

Why GSM is the wrong argument: the failure order

When a non-woven bag fails, it fails in a predictable sequence. We have set this out as a five-step order because it is the single most useful thing a buyer can carry into a specification meeting.

2 Gusset corner Three panels meet and the load turns a right angle. A boxed base rather than a folded corner.
3 Base seam Heavy contents rocking against one line of stitching or a weld. A base board insert or a double-stitched base.
4 Handle stretch Non-woven has limited elastic recovery; a narrow handle stretches and never returns. Wider handles, or webbing on heavy-duty bags.
5 The fabric itself Abrasion, a snag that starts a tear, or UV embrittlement. This is where GSM finally matters — and it is fifth on the list.

Read that table again and notice that four of the five fixes are construction decisions, not fabric decisions. Which is exactly why the second question you should ask a supplier is whether your non-woven bag seams are stitched or ultrasonically welded — that answer changes durability more than a ten-gram step in GSM ever will.

The three specs that beat GSM

1. Seam method

Ultrasonic welding fuses the polypropylene with high-frequency vibration — no thread, no needle. Fast, clean, cheap, and the reason very low-cost non-woven bags exist. It also creates a hard, brittle line that concentrates peel forces. Stitched seams spread load and can be reinforced. Neither is wrong; they are for different jobs.

2. Handle width, length and anchoring depth

Two numbers decide whether a handle survives: how wide it is, and how far down the body it is stitched. A 2.5cm handle attached with a 2cm join is a different product from a 3.5cm handle box-stitched over 6cm, even though both are quoted as “90gsm non-woven with loop handles”. For shoulder carry, ask for the drop measurement — top of bag to bottom of the handle loop — not total handle length.

3. Gusset and base construction

A flat bag holds documents. A 9–10cm gusset with a boxed base takes a shoebox, a hamper or a grocery run and stands up by itself — which matters at a registration desk. For heavy or rigid contents, ask about a base board.

Write these four lines into your brief and most GSM arguments disappear

  • Fabric: spunbond non-woven polypropylene, ___gsm, plain or laminated.
  • Seams: fully stitched / ultrasonic welded / welded body with stitched handles.
  • Handles: type, width, drop length, anchoring depth and reinforcement.
  • Base: gusset width, boxed or folded, base board yes or no.

A Malaysian-climate footnote on polypropylene

One genuine advantage of non-woven polypropylene in this market is that the fibre itself barely absorbs water. Unlike cotton canvas, a carton of non-woven bags left in a humid storeroom through the monsoon will not go mouldy or develop that damp-cupboard smell. That is a real, practical reason non-woven dominates warehouse-held giveaway stock here.

What does suffer here is sunlight and the print. Polypropylene embrittles under ultraviolet exposure over months, so cartons stored where the afternoon sun reaches them come out more brittle than stock from the same run kept in the dark. And ink films crack at fold lines long before the fabric fails — a printing problem, not a fabric one, which is why it is worth understanding which non-woven printing method the fabric can carry.

The ten-minute sample check before you approve thousands of pieces

Do this on the physical sample, in your own office, before you sign off artwork. Ten minutes, and the cheapest quality control in the process.

  1. Weigh a swatch. Cut, measure, weigh, divide. Compare against the table above.
  2. Load it with what it will actually carry. Not sand, not weights — the actual delegate pack, the actual gift-with-purchase items. Then lift it by one handle, not two.
  3. Swing test. Loaded, walk twenty steps with it swinging naturally. Shock loading, not static loading, is what breaks handle joins.
  4. Crease and rub. Fold the printed area hard, run a thumbnail along the fold ten times, then look at the crease under a light for hairline cracking in the ink.
  5. Seam peel. Pinch either side of a seam and pull apart steadily. A welded seam that opens with gentle, even pressure will open in a customer’s hands too.

Frequently asked questions

What GSM is best for a non-woven bag?

There is no single best. 75–80gsm for single-use volume giveaways, 90gsm for corporate and event bags, 100gsm and above for bags meant to carry groceries repeatedly. The more useful question is what the seams and handles are, because those fail first.

How much weight can a 90gsm non-woven bag carry?

No honest supplier can give one number: it depends on seam method, handle width and anchoring, gusset design and how the load is applied. A static load and a shock load are different tests. Load the sample with your real contents and carry it — worth more than any published figure.

Is a higher GSM always better?

No. Heavier fabric costs more, folds less flat, ships in bigger cartons and takes more storeroom space. For a one-day event handout, extra GSM is money that would have bought better printing or more bags.

Can I tell the GSM just by feeling the fabric?

Experienced buyers can usually tell 70gsm from 100gsm by hand. Almost nobody can reliably tell 80gsm from 90gsm, which is precisely the gap where substitutions happen. Weigh a swatch.
