Non Woven Bag Printing: Why Ink Sits On Polypropylene Instead of Soaking In

Cotton takes ink. Polypropylene does not. On a canvas tote the ink soaks into the fibre and becomes part of the cloth; on a non-woven bag the ink sits on the surface as a thin film and stays there only because of surface chemistry and a curing step that has to happen below the temperature at which the bag itself starts to melt. Nearly every print complaint we see on non-woven — cracking along a fold, a logo that lifts at the corner, a shiny glazed patch under the print — traces back to that one difference.

This is a printing guide written from the material outwards rather than from the price list inwards. It covers why polypropylene resists ink, the temperature window you are working inside, which of the four methods suits which artwork, and the artwork rules that are specific to non-woven rather than borrowed from cotton. The material problem nobody puts in the quotation

Polypropylene is a non-polar polymer with low surface energy — commonly quoted at around 29 to 31 dynes per centimetre in its untreated state. For an ink or coating to wet a surface properly and bond to it, the substrate generally needs to sit meaningfully higher than the ink’s own surface tension; roughly 38 to 42 dynes per centimetre is the practical target for polyolefins. Untreated PP is well below that line. That is the technical way of saying what everyone already knows about polypropylene from food containers: things do not stick to it.

Manufacturers get round this by treating the surface: corona or plasma treatment introduces polar groups into the top molecular layer and lifts the surface energy into the printable range. Two consequences matter to you as a buyer:

  • Treatment decays. It fades with time, handling, humidity and airborne contamination, so fabric treated months ago and stored in a humid warehouse does not print like fresh stock. It is one reason two runs of “the same” bag behave differently.
  • Ink choice is not interchangeable. An ink system formulated for cotton will not reliably adhere to PP. This is a specification question, not a preference — and it is why a print that looks perfect on press can fail a tape pull the next day.

The tape test, in thirty seconds

Press a strip of ordinary clear adhesive tape firmly over the printed area of your sample, leave it a few seconds, then pull it off sharply at a right angle. Ink that lifts onto the tape has an adhesion problem, and it will lift in a customer’s hands too. Do this on the pre-production sample, not on the delivered 5,000.

The temperature window: a fabric that melts at about 160°C

Polypropylene melts in the region of 160 to 170°C and softens well below that. Standard garment heat-transfer presses commonly run at 150 to 180°C. Put those two figures side by side and the constraint is obvious: on non-woven you are working right at the edge, and the margin for error is small.

That last row is worth stating plainly because it is a recurring source of confusion: sublimation, which gives beautiful all-over prints on polyester foldable bags, cannot be used on PP non-woven. If a brief calls for edge-to-edge photographic artwork on a non-woven bag, the answer is lamination print, not sublimation.

The three methods that actually run on non-woven

1. Silkscreen — the volume workhorse

Ink is pushed through a mesh stencil, one screen per colour, directly onto the fabric. It gives dense, crisp solid colour, it is the most cost-effective route at high volume because the screen cost is amortised across thousands of pieces, and it handles the classic corporate case perfectly: a one- or two-colour logo, large, on the front panel.

Its limits are clear too. Every extra colour is another screen, another pass, another registration risk; gradients and photographs are not its territory. And because the ink sits as a film on a fabric that creases, heavy solid coverage across a fold line is where cracking begins.

2. Heat transfer and DTF — detail in a small area

A full-colour design is printed onto a carrier and pressed onto the bag. It handles gradients, small type, photographic elements and multi-colour logos without a screen per colour, which makes it the sensible choice when the artwork is complex but the print area is modest.

The trade-offs on non-woven: the transfer film has a hand you can feel, and a large transfer on thin fabric creases differently from the fabric around it, so keep transfers off fold lines and gussets. And because the press must stay under the softening range, adhesion depends on getting time, temperature and pressure right — not on pressing harder and hotter.

3. Lamination print — full colour, edge to edge

The artwork is printed onto a thin film which is then laminated to the non-woven web, so the printing never touches the fabric at all. This is what makes photographic, edge-to-edge and wrap-around designs possible, and it delivers a wipe-clean, water-resistant face into the bargain.

Two things to weigh: the finished bag is stiffer and folds less flat, which affects cartons and storage; and it becomes a mixed-material product rather than a single-polymer one, which changes what you can honestly claim about it. Both matter more than buyers expect once you get to handing out thousands of printed non-woven bags on site.

Artwork rules that are specific to non-woven

These are not generic print tips. Each one exists because of something the fabric does.

  • Respect the bond-point texture. Spunbond fabric has a regular pattern of fused bond points, so it is not a smooth surface. Very fine reversed type and hairlines fill in or break up against that texture. Keep reversed type generous and line weights well above hairline.
  • The print area is smaller than the panel. On our A4 non-woven tote the finished bag is 26cm x 33cm but the print area is 20cm x 28cm; on the A3 version the bag is 42cm x 38cm and the print area is 36cm x 32cm. That margin is not stinginess — it is the clearance needed away from seams, handle joins and the gusset fold.
  • Design for the folded state. Non-woven bags are shipped and stored flat, and the primary fold runs through the middle of the front panel. A dense solid block sitting exactly on that fold is the artwork most likely to generate a cracking complaint six weeks later.
  • Keep artwork off the gusset radius. Ink on the curve where the gusset turns is under constant flex and is the first place a print lifts.
  • Send vector. AI, EPS or PDF with fonts outlined and colours specified. Raster logos scaled up to a 36cm print area are where “the logo looks fuzzy” complaints come from.

The crease test — our thirty-second predictor of a peel complaint

Fold the printed area of the sample sharply against itself. Run a thumbnail along the fold ten times. Open it out and look along the crease under a good light. Hairline cracks in the ink at this stage will be visible splits after a few weeks in a customer’s hands. If you see them, the fix is usually a thinner ink film, a redesign that moves the solid off the fold, or a switch to lamination — not a heavier press.

Colour on coloured fabric: why your Pantone shifts

Non-woven polypropylene is coloured in the melt, not dyed afterwards, so the stock colours are opaque and consistent from roll to roll — a genuine advantage over dyed cotton. What changes is what happens when you print on top of them.

Printing a light colour onto navy, black or dark purple needs a white underbase to stop the bag colour showing through and dulling the ink. That underbase is an extra ink layer, and on a creasing fabric extra film thickness means extra crack risk. Our contrarian advice, which will not appear on most supplier pages: on a dark bag, a single well-drawn white or light logo very often looks better and lasts longer than a full-colour build. If the campaign genuinely needs four-colour artwork, take the laminated route rather than stacking ink on dark spunbond.

Bear in mind too that fabric weight subtly changes how the ink sits — a lighter, more open web absorbs and spreads differently from a denser one, which is one more reason to settle non-woven fabric weight and what each GSM survives before the artwork is finalised. The same applies to construction: an ultrasonic weld line is a hard ridge that a screen cannot print evenly across, so the seam and construction spec behind the bag quietly constrains your print layout as well.

A production sequence that avoids reprints

  1. Confirm fabric, GSM, construction and bag dimensions first. Artwork is designed to a dieline, and the dieline comes from the bag.
  2. Choose the method from the artwork, not from the budget. A four-colour photographic design does not become silkscreen-friendly because silkscreen is cheaper.
  3. Approve the free digital mockup at real size on screen — not zoomed in.
  4. Request a pre-production sample for large runs, then run the tape test and the crease test on it yourself.
  5. Sign off artwork formally. The 20–30 working day production clock starts at artwork approval, not at the enquiry.
  6. On delivery, check a random carton from the middle of the pallet, not the top box.

Frequently asked questions

Can you print full-colour photographic artwork on a non-woven bag?

Yes, but through lamination print rather than directly onto the fabric. Direct full-colour on plain spunbond is limited to heat transfer or DTF within a modest print area.

Why is my print cracking along the fold?

Almost always ink film thickness on a fabric that creases: heavy solid coverage, or an underbase plus colour on a dark bag, sitting directly on the primary fold. Moving the solid off the fold or reducing the build usually solves it.

Can you match an exact brand Pantone?

Silkscreen inks can be mixed to a target Pantone, and we work as close as the substrate allows. Bear in mind that a matte, textured, mass-pigmented fabric will never read identically to a coated paper swatch — always judge against a printed sample, not a printed brochure.

Can you print both sides and the gusset?

Both sides, yes — it is one of the highest-value upgrades on an event bag. The gusset can carry a small logo or a web address by silkscreen, but it is a narrow, flexing area and is not suitable for detailed artwork.

Do printed non-woven bags survive washing?

Non-woven bags are not designed for machine washing; the fabric is bonded rather than woven and agitation damages it. Wipe clean with a damp cloth, and choose laminated non-woven if the bag will meet spills regularly.
