What “Keeps Cold 24 Hours” Really Measures: Testing Customised Tumblers in Malaysia
Almost every insulated tumbler quote that crosses our desk carries the same two numbers: hot 6 hours, cold 24 hours. What almost nobody tells the buyer is that those numbers come from a laboratory bench held at 20°C. Kuala Lumpur is not 20°C. A car boot in Cheras at 2pm is nowhere near 20°C. So the honest question is not “is the claim true?” — it usually is, on the bench — but what was it measured against, and what will it do in the hands of the person you are gifting it to?
This article does two things no supplier catalogue in Malaysia does. First, it shows you the actual test conditions behind the retention figure printed on your spec sheet. Second, it gives you a four-hour desk test you can run on a pre-production sample yourself, with nothing more exotic than a kitchen thermometer, so you never again approve 500 pieces on the strength of a number you cannot verify.
The 20-second version
Hot-retention claims for stainless vacuum drinkware are normally generated by a defined bench test: fill with water at 95°C ± 1°C, hold the container in an ambient of 20°C ± 5°C, then read the water temperature at the 6-hour mark. Cold-retention claims have no equivalent published bench standard, which is why “24 hours cold” varies so wildly between suppliers. Test your sample yourself before you commit the order.
Where the “6 hours hot” number on your quote comes from
The vast majority of vacuum-insulated stainless drinkware sold into Asian corporate gifting is built in factories that test against the Chinese national standard for stainless steel vacuum flasks, GB/T 29606. Its insulation-efficiency method is specific and it is worth knowing by heart, because it explains every quirk of the numbers you are quoted:
- The vessel is filled with water measured at 95°C ± 1°C, near-boiling, to a defined fill level.
- Ambient is held at 20°C ± 5°C — an air-conditioned laboratory, not a tropical office.
- The lid is closed and the vessel is left undisturbed for 6 hours (or 24 hours for flask-type products fitted with an inner plug).
- The internal water temperature is then read once, at the end. There is no continuous curve on your spec sheet — just a start point and an end point.
Three consequences follow immediately. The test starts hotter than anything you will actually pour — a flat white from the office machine leaves the group head far below 95°C. The test is undisturbed — nobody opens the lid at 10am for a sip. And the test is run in a cool room, so the temperature gradient driving heat out of the tumbler is roughly 75°C at the start. In an unconditioned KL corridor at 32°C, that gradient starts smaller for a hot drink and much larger for a cold one. Which is exactly why the hot claim tends to hold up here better than the cold claim does.
Cold retention: the claim with no bench standard behind it
Here is the part buyers find genuinely surprising. The published insulation-efficiency method covers hot retention. There is no equally standardised, universally quoted cold-retention bench method in the same document, so “keeps cold 24 hours” is almost always a supplier-generated figure using whatever protocol that supplier chose. Some fill with chilled water at 4°C. Some fill with water and ice, which is a completely different physical problem — melting ice absorbs a large amount of energy while holding the contents near 0°C, so a tumbler packed with ice will report a spectacular “still cold after 24 hours” result that has as much to do with the ice as with the vacuum.
That is not fraud, and we are not accusing anyone of it. It is simply an unregulated marketing number. When two quotes both say “24 hours cold” and one body is visibly thinner and lighter, you are not comparing like with like — you are comparing two different test protocols. The only reliable move is to stop comparing claims and start comparing samples, which is what the rest of this article is about. The four variables that move retention more than the vacuum does
When a recipient tells you “the tumbler you gave us doesn’t work”, the vacuum has almost never failed. Four ordinary usage variables swamp the difference between a good vacuum and a very good one.
1. Head space — the half-full penalty
A vessel filled to the brim carries far more thermal mass than the same vessel half filled, and the air gap above a half-fill acts as a heat exchanger against the lid. Bench tests use a defined fill level; real people fill 60–70% so it does not slosh. Expect real-world retention to fall noticeably short of the sheet for that reason alone.
2. Pre-conditioning
The inner liner itself has to be brought to temperature. Rinsing with hot water for a minute before filling — or with ice water for a cold drink — measurably extends how long the contents stay put. Nobody prints this on a spec sheet, and it is the single most useful line to put on the insert card that goes into your gift box.
3. Lid discipline
Every opening dumps the warmed or chilled air layer and replaces it with ambient. A slider lid that is left open on the desk is the fastest way to lose the whole benefit, which is one reason lid architecture deserves as much attention as wall construction — see the lid and gasket checks that stop leaks before you lock a model.
4. Where it sits
A vacuum wall resists conduction and convection well. It resists radiant load less well, and a dark powder-coated body parked on a car dashboard in direct sun is absorbing energy across its whole surface. For a fleet or roadshow gift, a lighter finish is not only a design decision.
The four-hour desk test: our sample acceptance protocol
This is the protocol we walk clients through when they want to compare two shortlisted bodies before committing a corporate run. It is deliberately short enough to fit inside one working day, and it uses your own office as the ambient — which is the whole point.
- Record the room. Note the air temperature where the samples will sit and whether the aircon cycles off at lunch. Without this number your result cannot be compared to anything.
- Pre-condition both samples identically. Rinse with hot water, empty, then fill both from the same kettle at the same moment to the same level — about 90% capacity. Same fill, same minute, or the test is meaningless.
- Take the start temperature with a probe thermometer inside the liquid, not against the wall. Close the lids and do not open them again.
- Leave them undisturbed for four hours on the same desk, out of direct sun, same distance from the aircon vent.
- At the four-hour mark, touch the outer wall first. A properly evacuated body should feel close to room temperature. Warmth on the outer wall, or condensation on a cold-fill test, points at a compromised vacuum — that is the fastest field diagnostic there is.
- Then read the internal temperature and record the drop from start. Repeat the whole exercise with iced water if cold performance is the priority for your recipients.
Production-floor tip
Weigh both samples empty before you start and write the weight down. Within the same capacity and finish, a meaningfully lighter body usually means a thinner liner or a shorter vacuum column. Weight alone proves nothing, but a sample that is both lighter and warmer on the outer wall at four hours is telling you the same story twice.

What we check before a body goes into a Malaysian corporate order

Building the test into your order timeline
The commonest reason a buyer skips sample testing is that there is no room left in the calendar. So plan for it. Our minimum order is from 200 pieces, production runs 20–30 working days after artwork approval depending on quantity, and shipping adds roughly 15 days. Express production of 7 working days exists for limited styles and quantities, but it is not the slot in which to be discovering that a body underperforms. Slot the four-hour desk test into the week before artwork approval, while the model can still be changed without resetting the clock.

How can I tell if a tumbler’s vacuum has failed?
Fill it with hot water, wait, then feel the outer wall. A working vacuum body stays close to room temperature; a noticeably warm outer wall means heat is crossing the gap. With a cold fill, beads of condensation on the outside are the same signal. Check the base cover for dents at the same time.
