Laser Engraving Through Powder Coat: What Each Tumbler Printing Method Does to the Finish (Malaysia)
There is a moment in almost every branded drinkware project where a marketing manager sees the first engraved sample and says, with visible disappointment, “but our logo is teal.” It is not. Not any more. A laser cutting through powder coat cannot produce teal, or navy, or corporate red. It produces one colour only: the bare stainless steel underneath, a warm metallic silver — and it produces it beautifully, permanently and at a level of perceived quality that no print can touch.
That single misunderstanding causes more artwork rework on stainless tumbler orders than every other issue combined. So this article is about what each decoration method physically does to a powder-coated stainless body — the two-tone reveal of laser, the ink film of a UV print, the polymer skin a sublimation wrap actually needs — and how to work out which one your logo will survive, before the mockup rather than after.
The one-paragraph version
Laser removes the powder coat and reveals bare metal — permanent, premium, single-colour, and it fights fine detail. UV print lays a cured ink film on top of the coat — full colour, good on flat-ish areas, dependent on adhesion to a textured surface. Sublimation dyes a polymer coating and therefore needs a sublimation-ready blank, not a powder-coated one. Choose the method first, then adapt the artwork to it.
What the laser actually does to a powder-coated body
Powder coat is a cured organic film sitting on top of the steel. A laser aimed at it does not “engrave” in the way people picture — it ablates. The beam burns the coating away layer by layer inside the shape of your artwork, until the steel beneath is exposed. Operators typically work in two passes: a fast, low-power pass to lift the bulk of the coating, then a slower, higher-power pass to clean the floor of the mark and settle its tone on the metal.
That is the whole trick behind the “two-tone” look people admire on premium tumblers: dark powder coat, bright metallic logo. The contrast is entirely a function of how dark the coat is. A black or deep navy body gives a striking reveal. A pale grey or champagne coat gives a soft, low-contrast one, because silver-on-silver is barely a contrast at all. If your artwork depends on impact, the powder colour is part of the artwork decision, not a separate one.
Three practical consequences follow. Coating thickness varies between suppliers and even between batches, so the settings that gave a clean reveal on last year’s body may leave patchy coverage on this year’s — which is exactly why we insist on running the first article on the actual production body rather than approving from a render. Too much power melts rather than lifts the coating, leaving a raised, glassy edge around the mark. And uneven removal — a faint ghost of colour still sitting inside the letterforms — is the most common defect, usually from focus drift across a curved surface.
The four artworks that break on an engraved body
Engraving is subtractive and single-tone. Any artwork that relies on colour relationships or very fine positive-negative structure has to be redrawn. These are the four we flag most often at mockup stage:
- Multi-colour logos where the colours carry the meaning. A two-colour wordmark becomes one colour. If the two halves of the name were distinguished only by colour, they now read as one word. Solve it with spacing or a rule, not with hope.
- Hairline strokes and fine serifs. Below roughly the width of a couple of beam passes, a stroke stops being a stroke and becomes a broken dotted line. Thicken the weight for the engraved version.
- Gradients and tonal photography. There is no halftone in a coating-removal process worth relying on for a corporate mark. Convert to a solid silhouette or choose a print method instead.
- Reversed-out detail inside a solid block. Small counters — the holes in an “a”, a thin knockout line — fill in when the surrounding area is fully ablated. Enlarge the counters or lose the block.
Ask for an engraved-variant logo, once
If your organisation orders drinkware more than once, get your designer to produce a single-colour, engraving-ready version of the logo now and store it with the brand assets. Thicker strokes, opened counters, no gradients. Every future stainless order — and every laser-marked pen, bottle opener and plaque — then starts from a file that already works, instead of a rushed redraw two days before artwork approval.
UV print on powder coat: colour on top of texture
UV printing jets ink onto the body and cures it instantly with ultraviolet light, building a thin solid film that sits on the surface. It is the answer when you need full colour, gradients or a photographic element on a stainless body, and it is the only one of the three that can put your exact brand colour on a coated tumbler.
The trade-off is that adhesion is now the whole ball game, and powder coat is a difficult host. Matte and textured finishes give the ink more mechanical key than glossy ones, but a heavily textured coat also scatters fine detail; a very smooth gloss coat prints crisply but gives the ink less to hold on to and may need a primer or adhesion promoter. Either way the printed film is a film: it can be scratched by keys in a bag and it is the layer that suffers first in a dishwasher. Hand-washing advice on the insert card is not a disclaimer, it is genuinely how you make a UV-printed tumbler last.
There is one more subtlety worth knowing. Because the ink is translucent in thin films, printing a light colour directly onto a dark powder coat gives a muddy result. A white underbase is laid down first, then the colour on top — which is why a white-on-black print behaves differently, and prices differently, from the same artwork on a pale body. Decide the powder colour and the artwork together, not in sequence.
Sublimation wrap: it needs a different body entirely
This is the point that catches out buyers who have previously ordered ceramic drinkware. Sublimation is not a printing process that lands ink on a surface — it is a dyeing process. Under heat, solid dye turns to gas and diffuses into a polymer layer, then solidifies inside it. No polymer layer, no sublimation. Bare stainless cannot be sublimated, and neither can a standard powder-coated body: the coat is a cured thermoset, not a receptive polyester receiving layer.
What you order for a true edge-to-edge photographic wrap is a sublimation-ready blank — a tumbler supplied with a white polyester coating already applied at the factory. The printed transfer is wrapped around it, secured, and the whole assembly heated so the dye migrates into that coating. The result is genuinely permanent, cannot be scratched off, and covers the entire body including the areas a flat print cannot reach.
What you give up is the finish. You are no longer holding a matte powder-coated stainless object; you are holding a white-coated one with your artwork in it. For a consumer campaign, a retail gift-with-purchase or a youth-facing brand, that is often exactly right. For a premium client gift where the material itself is doing the work, it is usually the wrong call. And practically: an edge-to-edge wrap on a tapered body distorts, because a cone does not unroll into a rectangle — straight-sided bodies are far kinder to full-wrap artwork.
Geometry decides your print area before any method does
Every method on this page is applied to a curved surface, and curvature is unforgiving. Three geometric facts govern how much of your artwork actually survives:
- Taper. A body that narrows towards the base — which is what makes it fit a car cup holder — is a cone, and a wrap laid flat on a cone bows. Either accept a curved layout or keep the artwork inside a single panel.
- Diameter. The tighter the curve, the shorter the horizontal run of artwork that can stay in focus and in contact. Wide bodies take long wordmarks; slim bodies do not.
- Interruptions. Seams, moulded grip bands, base flares and the shoulder radius all break the usable window. The real print area is rarely the whole body height.
Because of that, the model you choose sets the artwork brief, not the other way around — and the lid is part of the same picture, since a logo on the body has to sit in proportion to which lid style your artwork has to share space with. Availability of any method depends on the specific model, its finish and its geometry. Your digital mockup confirms the achievable area and method before anything is produced.
The artwork pack that avoids a reprint
Send these five things with your brief and the mockup usually comes back right first time, which matters when the clock on production is 20–30 working days after artwork approval plus roughly 15 days shipping:
- Vector artwork (AI, EPS or PDF) with fonts converted to outlines. A raster logo pulled from a website cannot be scaled or cleanly ablated.
- A single-colour version of the same mark, for the engraved option.

- Placement intent — one side, wrap, lid, or a combination — and any minimum size the brand guidelines impose.

Frequently asked questions
What colour does laser engraving produce on a powder-coated tumbler?
The colour of the bare stainless steel underneath — a metallic silver tone. The laser removes the coating rather than adding pigment, so the mark cannot be produced in a brand colour. Contrast comes from choosing a darker powder coat, not from the laser.
Can you sublimate onto a powder-coated stainless tumbler?
No. Sublimation dye has to diffuse into a receptive polymer coating, so it requires a sublimation-ready blank supplied with that coating from the factory. If you want a full-colour wrap, specify that body type at the start — it is a different product, not a different print setting.
Is a UV-printed tumbler dishwasher safe?
Treat it as hand-wash. A UV print is a cured film on the surface, and repeated hot, high-alkaline dishwasher cycles plus abrasion are the fastest way to dull or lift it. Engraving has no such limitation because there is no applied layer to remove.
Can we combine engraving and printing on the same tumbler?
