85.6 by 54: Why “Fits a Name Card” Is Not a Card Holder Specification
The shortest card holder brief we have ever received was four words long: must fit a name card. It sounds like a specification. It is not one, and the reason it is not one is the single most useful thing a Malaysian buyer can learn before ordering 300 pieces of anything that holds a card.
Here is the awkward split at the heart of this product. Your staff pass, your MyKad, your bank card and your driving licence are all exactly the same size, to a fraction of a millimetre, because an international standard says so. Your name cards are not. They are whatever your printer’s guillotine was set to. A holder built around the first group will refuse the second, and a holder built around the second will let the first slide about inside it. Almost every fit complaint we receive traces back to that one sentence.
This article works from the card outwards: the governing dimension, the clearance a cavity needs, the arithmetic behind capacity, and what happens to a stitched edge when people ignore that number for a year.
The governing dimension: ID-1
The format is called ID-1 and it is defined in ISO/IEC 7810, the international standard for identification card dimensions. ID-1 is 85.60 mm wide, 53.98 mm high and 0.76 mm thick, with rounded corners of roughly 3 mm radius. That is the size of a bank card. It is also the size of a MyKad, a Malaysian driving licence, a Touch ‘n Go card, a hotel key card and the overwhelming majority of office access passes.
Two consequences follow. First, if the item is a plastic card of any kind, you already know its dimensions without measuring it — and so does the factory. Second, that certainty vanishes the moment the item is paper. A card holder is one of the few corporate gifts where half the possible contents are standardised to a tenth of a millimetre and the other half are not standardised at all.
The one line to write down: 85.60 × 53.98 × 0.76 mm. Every cavity, window and slot in this product category is designed around that rectangle, or should be. When a supplier quotes an internal size, compare it with those three numbers before you compare it with anything else.
Why “fits a name card” is not a specification
Business cards have no ISO standard, and Malaysia sits between two printing traditions. The size we see most often on cards handed to us in Kuala Lumpur is 90 × 54 mm. Behind it sit 88 × 55 mm and the American-derived 90 × 50 mm, plus square, folded and oversized cards from studios who wanted to be memorable.
Look at the width. A 90 mm name card is 4.4 mm wider than an ID-1 card, and on a product measured in millimetres that is enormous. A slim case cut tight to ID-1 will not close over a stack of 90 mm name cards; the cards bow and the closure strains. A case sized generously for 90 mm cards leaves an ID-1 card rattling with a visible gap down one side, which looks like a fault even though it is not.

This is why our first reply to a card holder brief is almost never about material or colour. It is a request: post us one of the actual cards, or measure it with a ruler and send us three numbers. The cavity is not the card: clearance, and how much is right
A pocket cut to exactly 85.60 mm would be unusable. Every cavity carries clearance, and the amount of it is a design decision with consequences at both ends.
- Too tight. The card cannot be removed with one hand. Watch someone at a turnstile: they need a thumb on the card and a finger against the holder, and if there is no thumb slot they will pinch the whole holder and bend it. A pocket that grips is a pocket that gets pulled out of shape within weeks.
- Too loose. A single ID-1 card in a slack pocket slides, tilts and shows a wedge of lining down one edge. In a vertical holder on a neck strap, it works its way upward every time the wearer walks, and eventually it works its way out.
- The rescue feature. A thumb cut-out, a scalloped top edge, or a front panel slightly lower than the back turns a tight pocket into a usable one without loosening it — and it costs nothing to specify.
The clearance question also decides how the holder behaves as it ages, because a pocket that is already at its limit has nowhere to go when a second card arrives. Capacity arithmetic: how many cards it is designed to take
Suppliers describe capacity in pieces. “Holds 20 cards.” That number is nearly always counted in paper, and it collapses in plastic, because a plastic card is roughly twice the thickness of a printed name card.

Two corrections belong on top of that table. Embossed bank cards do not stack flat — put two face to face and the raised characters interlock badly, adding height the arithmetic does not predict. And a clamshell access card eats the room of more than two ordinary cards on its own.
The count that actually matters: before you decide capacity, ask four colleagues to empty what they currently carry in their pass holder and count it. In our experience the honest answer for Malaysian office staff is a staff pass, a Touch ‘n Go or transit card, one bank card and a scattering of name cards. That is three plastic plus paper — and it is a very different product from a slim executive case built for name cards alone.
What over-stuffing does to a stitched edge over a year
Nobody sets out to over-stuff a card holder. It happens one card at a time, and the holder never protests loudly enough for anyone to stop. What is happening inside is straightforward mechanics, and it runs in a predictable sequence.
- Month one: the cavity takes a set. PU and leather stretch under sustained load and do not fully recover, so the pocket that gripped one card now holds three loosely.
- Month three: the seam carries the load. The stack pushes outward along the sides. Because a card is a rigid rectangle, that push is concentrated exactly along the stitch line rather than spread over the panel. The thread starts doing structural work it was not sized for.
- Month six: the corner gapes. Stitching fails where the direction changes. The corner is where thread tension is highest and where the needle has already perforated the material most densely, so the first visible gap almost always appears within 10 mm of a corner.
- Month twelve: the closure stops working. On a folding cardholder the two panels can no longer meet, so a press stud sits under permanent tension and eventually pulls its rivet through the backing. On a zip holder the chain is forced apart from inside and the slider begins to skip.
The design answer is not thicker material. It is honest capacity plus a reinforced seam: a folded edge rather than a raw one, a backstitch at each corner, and a gusset if the holder is expected to carry a mixed stack.
The eight-minute fit test, before you approve 300 pieces
Run this on the pre-production sample, with the real cards your people carry. It costs nothing and it is the single highest-value eight minutes in this category.

The five lines that belong in your brief
- Contents. “Two ID-1 cards plus up to eight name cards at 90 × 54 mm” beats “cards” by a distance.
- Orientation. Portrait or landscape, decided by how the pass is printed and by whether it hangs or sits in a pocket.
- Withdrawal aid. Thumb slot, scallop or lower front panel — name which one you want.
- Thickest item. State it in millimetres if any user carries a clamshell access card.
- Growth allowance. One spare card slot beyond today’s count, because the stack only ever grows.

Questions buyers ask about custom card holders
Is there one holder size that fits both name cards and staff passes?
Yes, if you size the cavity for the wider name card and add a withdrawal aid so the narrower plastic card can still be gripped. What does not work is sizing tight to ID-1 and hoping the paper will fit. When one product must serve both jobs, we design to the larger footprint and use a lining with enough friction to stop a lone card sliding.
Portrait or landscape for a staff pass?
Match the pass artwork, not the holder catalogue. If your ID cards are printed portrait, a landscape holder crops the photograph or hides the name. Decide the pass layout first and order the holder to suit it.
