“Fits a 15-Inch Laptop”: What a Messenger Bag Actually Has to Measure

A 15.6-inch Dell Latitude 5550 is 357.80 mm wide. A 16-inch MacBook Pro is 355.70 mm wide. The bag with the smaller screen number on the box is the wider machine. Turn the two around and the picture flips again: the MacBook Pro is 248.10 mm deep against the Dell’s 233.30 mm — nearly 15 mm more. This is why “fits a 15-inch laptop” is not a specification. It is a hope.

If you are ordering 300 bags for a staff kit or an onboarding pack, you cannot ask 300 people what they carry. What you can do is size the compartment against the largest real footprint in the fleet, not against a screen diagonal. This article gives you the measurements, the three clearances a compartment has to provide, the base-drop rule that decides whether a corner impact reaches the machine, and a ten-minute fit test to run on the sample. The Inch Number Describes a Screen, Not a Machine

A laptop’s advertised size is the diagonal of its display. Bezels, hinge design and cooling all change how much chassis wraps around that display, so two machines carrying the same label can differ by more than a centimetre in every direction. Here are four representative footprints taken from the manufacturers’ own specification sheets.

Read the bold cells. The widest machine in this group is labelled 15.6-inch; the deepest is labelled 16-inch; and the thickest, at up to 22.8 mm, is that same 15.6-inch Dell — roughly twice the thickness of the 15-inch MacBook Air. A compartment sized to “15 inches” using a MacBook Air 15 as the reference is 17 mm too narrow for the Dell and 10 mm too shallow for the MacBook Pro. Both of those failures show up on the day the bags are handed out.

The Three Clearances a Compartment Has to Give

A laptop compartment is not one number. It is three, and the third is the one that gets forgotten.

  • Width clearance. Internal width must exceed the widest machine in the fleet by roughly 15–20 mm. Less than that and the machine has to be forced past the padding, which is how side edges get scuffed.
  • Depth clearance. Internal depth must exceed the deepest machine by a similar margin, plus whatever the compartment’s own base padding occupies.
  • Thickness clearance. This is the forgotten one. A slim machine plus a protective shell plus a wall charger tucked in behind it can double the effective thickness. Allow at least 10 mm over the thickest machine, and more if the fleet uses hard shells.

Applied to the four machines above, a compartment honestly described as taking anything from a 13-inch to a 16-inch machine needs an internal opening of roughly 375 mm wide by 265 mm deep, with a gusset of about 30 mm. Ask for those three internal numbers in millimetres on the mockup. A supplier who will put them in writing has measured the sample; one who answers “yes, fits 15-inch” has not.

Brief line worth stealing: “Laptop compartment internal opening to be stated in mm (width × depth × gusset) on the mockup, measured empty, and confirmed on the pre-production sample with a physical device.”

Base Clearance: The Drop That Actually Reaches the Machine

Laptops in bags are rarely damaged by being crushed. They are damaged when the bag is set down — on a floor, a boot lip, a conference chair — and the impact travels straight up through the base of the bag into the bottom edge of the machine. A 2.15 kg laptop dropped 20 cm onto a hard floor delivers all of that energy through whatever sits between the machine’s bottom edge and the ground.

The engineering answer is a suspended sleeve: the padded pocket is stitched so its bottom seam sits above the bag’s own base, typically by 20–25 mm, leaving a cushion of air and padding underneath. It costs a little more to build because the sleeve has to hang from the back panel rather than simply being sewn into the base seam. On a sample you can check it in two seconds — slide a machine in, stand the bag on a table, and feel whether the bottom edge of the machine is resting on the table through the fabric. If it is, the sleeve is not suspended.

Padding: Closed-Cell Foam, and What Fleece Does Not Do

Two different materials get called “padding” and they do different jobs. A soft brushed lining — fleece, tricot, microfibre — protects the finish of the machine from scuffing. It absorbs almost no impact. Closed-cell foam, usually EVA or a dense polyethylene sheet between 4 and 8 mm thick, is what actually absorbs energy, and it keeps doing so after months of compression because its cells do not collapse into each other.

You want both, in the right order: closed-cell foam for impact, brushed lining against the machine for finish. What you do not want is an open sponge layer, which feels thick and generous in the showroom and is flat within a few months of daily carry. If the sample’s compartment can be pinched between finger and thumb until the two walls almost touch, there is no working foam in it. And because that foam sits directly behind the bag’s front panel, it also stiffens the surface you may be printing on — worth reading alongside branding placement on a messenger bag body.

The Cable-and-Charger Problem

Ask anyone what actually lives in their bag and the laptop is only the start: a power brick, a USB-C cable, a mouse, a dongle or two, a power bank, sometimes a small charger for headphones. These are the heaviest, hardest and most awkward objects in the bag, and in a poorly organised messenger they end up loose in the main compartment — which means they end up pressed against the laptop.

A hard plug edge resting against a display for a train ride, repeated daily, is one of the more common ways a screen picks up pressure marks. The fix is not more pockets — it is the right pockets, placed away from the laptop wall:

  • A gusseted front pocket deep enough for a power brick, on the opposite side of the bag from the laptop sleeve.
  • Elastic cable loops rather than open slip pockets — a cable in an open pocket migrates within a day.
  • One zipped or secured small pocket for dongles and a mouse, so the small hard items cannot travel.
  • A divider between the laptop sleeve and the main compartment, so loose items in the main space never touch the machine.

Sizing for a Fleet You Cannot Survey

Here is the rule we use when a client cannot poll every recipient. It takes about ten minutes and needs no survey.

The widest-and-deepest method

  1. Ask IT for the list of standard-issue models, not screen sizes. Most Malaysian organisations run two or three models across the whole company.
  2. Look up each model’s width, depth and thickness on the manufacturer’s specification page. Five minutes of work.
  3. Take the largest width in the list and the largest depth in the list — they will often belong to different machines. That imaginary machine is what you size against.
  4. Add 15–20 mm to each for the sleeve lining and easy entry, and 10 mm to the thickest for shells and cases.
  5. Put those three numbers in the brief. If a bag style cannot meet them, you have learned that before production rather than after.

The Ten-Minute Fit Test on the Sample

Bring the largest machine in the fleet, not a spare 13-inch from a drawer, and run these five checks before you approve production.

  1. One-handed entry. Can the machine go in without being pushed sideways past the padding? If it needs two hands and a wiggle, it is too tight for daily use.
  2. The stand test. Loaded, stand the bag on a hard table and feel for the machine’s bottom edge through the base fabric.
  3. The pinch test. Pinch the empty compartment walls. Two walls that meet easily means lining, not foam.
  4. The full-load test. Put the laptop, charger, bottle and a notebook in together, then close the bag. If the closure will not shut with a realistic load, the compartment volumes are wrong.
  5. The carry test. Wear it loaded for five minutes. This is also when strap faults surface — check webbing width and adjuster hardware on the shoulder strap at the same time.
