Your Logo Lands on the Fold: Paper Bag Artwork Across Gussets, Creases and the Base
Your designer builds the artwork on a rectangle. The factory prints it on a cross-shaped flat sheet, then folds that sheet along seven or eight lines to make a bag. Everything that goes wrong with paper bag artwork happens in the gap between those two pictures. A logo that sits beautifully centred in the design file can arrive sitting fourteen millimetres from a crease that runs vertically through the brand name. A full-bleed pattern that looked seamless on screen can arrive with a visible step where the side gusset folds inwards. Nobody catches it, because nobody in the approval chain ever looked at the flat sheet.
This is the artwork problem that no one plans for, and it is specific to a folded paper package. A paper bag is packaging: it exists flat, becomes a three-dimensional object at the counter, gets folded again on the way home, and is often folded flat once more before it is stored or thrown away. Your artwork has to survive all four of those states. Here is how the panels actually unfold, where the creases land, and the reverse-dieline exercise we run with clients before a run of 500 pcs goes to plate.
The anatomy of the flat sheet
Open a carrier bag out completely — not just flattened, but the glue seam split and the base unfolded — and you get a single printed sheet with these regions on it:
- Front and back panels — the two faces the customer sees. These are the only truly flat, uninterrupted areas on the bag.
- Two side gussets — each one is a narrow panel that folds inward on itself. Critically, a gusset carries three parallel creases, not one.
- The side seam flap — a narrow strip at one edge of the sheet that gets glued behind the opposite panel. Anything printed on it is either hidden or doubled.
- The base flaps — a set of tabs that fold and interlock to form the bottom. Most of this area ends up buried under other flaps.
- The top turnover — a strip along the mouth that folds inward to double the board where the handles attach. It is printed the right way up on the sheet and ends up upside down inside the bag.
Once you can name those five regions, most artwork disasters become predictable rather than mysterious. The three that cause almost all the trouble are the gusset, the turnover and the seam.
The gusset is not one fold — it is three
Designers usually treat a side gusset as a narrow flat panel between the front and the back. It is not. When the bag is collapsed flat — which is how it is stored, shipped and stacked under your counter — the gusset folds inwards in a W. That means the visible width of the gusset when the bag is flat is roughly half its true width, and the two halves are split by a hard centre crease running the full height of the bag.
Three consequences follow, and they catch out even experienced packaging designers:
- Any logo centred on the gusset is bisected by the centre crease. When the bag stands open, the two halves face away from each other at an angle, so the mark is never seen whole from any single viewpoint.
- A wrap-around pattern must continue across the gusset, but the eye reads the two gusset halves as a step rather than a continuation once the bag is open. Geometric patterns and straight rules suffer badly; organic textures survive.
- On a collapsed bag — the state a customer sees on a shelf or in a stack — the outer half of the gusset sits directly beside the front panel. Any colour mismatch between them is glaring.
The practical rule. Treat each half of the gusset as its own tiny panel. Either leave both halves as a plain field of colour, or place a small repeating element that reads correctly at half-width. Never put a wordmark, a strapline, a QR code or contact details on a gusset. There is no version of the bag in which they are legible.
Where a mark should never sit

The turnover: the strip that quietly steals your headline
The top hem is doubled over so the board is twice as thick where the handles pull on it. That doubling has to come from somewhere, and it comes off the top of your front panel. On the flat sheet, the turnover strip looks like part of the panel and prints in the same orientation. On the finished bag it is on the inside, upside down.
Two things follow. First, a headline set near the top of the design will be partly or completely swallowed. Second, if you deliberately want something on that inner strip — a thank-you line, a social handle, a small pattern visible when the bag is opened — it must be supplied rotated so that it reads correctly once folded. Getting that rotation wrong is one of the more common reasons a bag looks strange when a customer glances inside it.
The turnover is also the area the handle patch is glued to. A dense ink coverage there can affect how well adhesive keys into the surface, which is one of several quiet interactions between the print file and the structure. If you are specifying a rope handle punched through this zone, it is worth understanding which handle type holds the weight before you commit to a full-coverage design across the hem.
The reverse-dieline check
This is the exercise we ask a client’s designer to run once, on a physical sample, before final artwork is approved. It takes about fifteen minutes and it has caught more problems for our clients than any amount of on-screen proofing.
- Take a blank bag in the exact size you have ordered and open it out completely. Split the glue seam carefully with a blade and unfold the base.
- Trace every crease with a marker. You should end up with the full crease map: two front-to-gusset folds, two gusset centre folds, one seam line, the base scores, the turnover line.
- Lay your artwork over it at actual size. Print it on office paper and hold both up to a window if you have no light box. Every crease line should now be visible through your design.
- Mark every element a crease touches. Circle them. This is your fix list, and it is almost always longer than expected.
- Refold the traced sheet back into a bag and look at it from three viewpoints: standing on a counter, held at the customer’s side, and collapsed flat. Anything that only works from one of the three needs moving.
Step five is the one people underestimate. A bag lives in three states, and a design that only resolves in one of them will look wrong most of the time it is being seen. The collapsed state in particular is how the bag looks in every stack behind your counter and in every carton you receive. The dimensions of the bag decide how severe that flattening is, which is why working the bag dimensions back from the product should be settled before artwork begins, not alongside it.
Supplying files that hold up
Once the layout is right, the file itself has to be right. This is the checklist our team applies to every incoming paper bag file:
- Vector, built on the supplied dieline. Illustrator, EPS or press-ready PDF. Never design on a photograph of a bag and never redraw the dieline by eye.
- Dieline on its own locked layer, in a named spot colour, set to overprint and deleted before output — not merged into the artwork.
- Bleed on every outer edge of the flat sheet, including the seam flap and every base tab. A missing bleed on a base tab shows as a white sliver along the bottom edge of a finished bag.
- Fonts outlined, images embedded, colour mode set for print. Brand colours specified as named spot values, not eyeballed process builds, if the colour is going to be compared to another item in the same gift set.
- Foil, emboss and spot-gloss on separate layers, drawn as solid black shapes at 100 per cent, each layer named for what it is. These become separate tooling steps and cannot be interpreted from a visual.
- Minimum line weights honoured. Hairlines that survive on screen disappear in foil and thicken in flexo on kraft. If your logo has fine rules, ask which process is being used before you assume they will hold.
The board and finish also change what the artwork can carry: a soft kraft absorbs fine detail, a coated laminated board preserves it. Deciding matt, gloss or unlaminated board before the design is finalised saves a round of revisions, because a design built for coated card rarely transfers to kraft without simplification.

Can artwork wrap right around the whole bag?
Yes — full-wrap printing across front, gussets and back is standard on offset work. What it cannot do is make the gusset creases invisible. Choose a pattern that tolerates a break: textures, organic marks and small repeats survive; long straight lines and large geometric shapes reveal every fold.
Do you supply a dieline template?
Yes, for the size you order, with crease lines, bleed and safe areas marked. If you do not have a designer, our team can set the artwork up from your vector logo and return it on the mockup for approval.
Why does my logo look off-centre on the finished bag?
Usually because it was centred on the flat sheet rather than on the front panel. The seam flap and the gusset allowances mean the centre of the sheet is not the centre of the face. Always centre to the panel, using the dieline.
How long does artwork approval add to the schedule?
The mockup usually comes back within one business day; the delay is almost always on the approval side. Production is 20–30 working days after artwork approval, plus around 15 days shipping, with an express route of 7 working days on limited styles and quantities.
