Printing on a Cone: Why Paper Cup Artwork Skews, and How to Fix It (Malaysia)
Your artwork is never printed on a cup. It is printed on a flat fan of board, die-cut like a slice of a doughnut, and only afterwards is that fan rolled, overlapped and welded into a cone. Every straight line you drew stops being straight the moment the blank is formed — and that single piece of geometry explains almost every “this is not what we approved” email a cup order ever generates.
A paper cup is not a cylinder. It is a truncated cone: wider at the rim than at the base, so that cups nest inside each other in a stack. Unroll a cone and you do not get a rectangle. You get a curved fan — a broad arc along the rim edge, a shorter arc along the base edge, and two straight radial sides that meet at the seam. Artwork drawn on a rectangle and dropped onto that fan will skew, and the skew is not a printing fault. It is arithmetic.

The fan, not the rectangle
Two rules follow from the fan shape, and everything else in this article is a consequence of them.
Anything that should look vertical on the finished cup must be drawn as a radial line on the blank — a line pointing at the centre of the fan’s curvature. Draw two parallel vertical stripes on a rectangle and, on the cup, they will lean away from each other, wider apart at the rim than at the base.
Anything that should look horizontal on the finished cup must be drawn as an arc. A straight band across a rectangle becomes a spiral that visibly drops as it travels round the cup. This is the single most common artwork error we see: a wordmark set on a straight baseline that appears, on the finished cup, to be running downhill.
A good cup dieline already carries these curves. The job of the designer is to work inside the supplied dieline rather than to design a rectangle and hand it over hoping it will be fitted. If the dieline has not been supplied, ask for it before any layout work starts — it is the difference between one artwork round and four.
What the cone does to four common designs

A working limit our studio applies. Keep circles and squares narrower than about 80% of the cup’s base diameter. Beyond that the shape wraps far enough round the cone for the distortion to become obvious from a normal viewing angle — and the bigger you make the mark to “fix” it, the worse it gets.
The four bands of a cup blank
A blank is not one printable surface. It is four bands, and only one of them belongs to you. This is the framework we mark up on every cup dieline before it goes to a client’s designer.
Band 1 — the rim curl
The top edge of the blank is curled outward to form the bead the lid clips onto. That curl consumes a strip of board along the entire top arc, and anything printed there disappears into the roll or ends up smeared across a curved surface where it cannot be read. Keep the design clear of the top band completely; it is not a margin you can borrow.
Band 2 — the print field
The band between the curl and the base wrap is the real estate you actually own. It is narrower than the cup looks, and it is the only region where you should place anything that must be read: brand name, tagline, contact details, campaign hashtag.
Band 3 — the base wrap
The lower arc of the blank is folded inward and knurled around the base disc. Artwork placed there is either pulled under the cup or crushed into the knurl. Background colour can run into this band; a logo cannot.
Band 4 — the seam allowance
One radial edge of the blank tucks under the other and the two are welded by melting the lining. That overlap is a vertical strip of design that simply vanishes from view, and the underlying face usually needs to be free of heavy ink so the weld bonds cleanly. Ink in the wrong place here is not a cosmetic problem — it is a leak, as we explain in the piece on the difference between a hot-cup and a cold-cup build.
Designing around the seam instead of into it
The seam is the one feature of a cup that a designer can plan around perfectly, because its position is known before anything is drawn. Three practical rules:
- Put the primary logo on the face opposite the seam. That is the side a right-handed drinker turns towards themselves, and it is the side a photograph favours.
- If a pattern must wrap continuously, allow around a millimetre of movement in either direction at the join. Blanks register within a tolerance, not to a fixed point, so a pattern that only works with a perfect match will not always match.
- Never straddle a QR code, a legal line or small print across the seam. The overlap will clip it on some cups and not on others, which is worse than losing it consistently.
Where a design genuinely needs a flat, undistorted surface — a fine wordmark, a long strapline, a set of legal lines — the honest answer is often to move it off the cup entirely and put it on a band that barely curves at all, which we cover when weighing up whether a sleeve is the better branding surface.

Approve the cup, not the flat file
This is the rule we are strictest about, because it is where the argument happens later. A flat proof of a cup blank always looks better than the cup will, because the eye reads the fan as a rectangle and mentally straightens everything. Sign-off on that file means both sides have approved different objects.
Ask instead for the artwork wrapped onto the cup form and shown from at least two angles — the logo face and the seam face. Then run three checks: does the wordmark still sit level, does anything important vanish into the seam, and does the mark clear the rim curl and the base wrap. Those three questions catch nearly every distortion problem before a plate is made.
The paper-cone check, before you send anything
Print your artwork on ordinary paper at cup size, cut it out along the dieline, and tape it round a plain cup from the pantry. Sixty seconds of work, no software, and it shows you the downhill wordmark, the splayed keyline and the logo half-swallowed by the seam — the same three faults we would otherwise raise on your second proof round.
Questions buyers ask us about cup artwork
Why does my logo look stretched on the finished cup?
Because it was drawn for a flat surface and applied to a cone. The cup is wider at the rim than the base, so a shape that wraps a long way round appears wider at the top. Reducing the mark or moving it into the middle of the print field usually solves it without redrawing anything.
Can you print right up to the rim?
Background colour can run towards the top edge, but the rim curl takes a band of that board out of view, and print is deliberately kept off the drinking edge on a food-contact item. Can we run a seamless wrap-around pattern?
Yes, with the right kind of pattern. Non-directional textures, scattered motifs and organic marks hide the join. Precise geometry — grids, evenly spaced stripes, repeating rules — will show any small variation at the seam, so design it to tolerate about a millimetre of movement.

Send vector artwork with outlined fonts, placed on the dieline we supply for your chosen size, plus a note of any critical brand colour.
