Faded by Month Three: Colourfastness, Shrinkage and the Care Label Nobody Reads
Uniform complaints almost never arrive in week one. They arrive in month three, and they arrive in a particular order: the collar has gone dull, one department’s shirts look a shade lighter than another’s, someone’s garment no longer tucks in, and there is a faint underarm mark that will not wash out. None of that is bad luck. All of it is specification — and all of it has a test method with a name and a number you can put on a purchase order.
Most Malaysian uniform pages promise “durable, high-quality fabric” and name nothing. This one names things. It is written from the production side — we have been approving samples, chasing lab dips and rejecting batches since 2003 as a Singapore-based corporate gifting specialist, now serving Malaysia — and it ends with six checks you can run on a pre-production sample yourself, on a desk, before you approve a run of 200 garments.
Where a uniform gives up first, and in what order
Garments do not wear out evenly. Knowing the sequence tells you which specification actually matters for your team, rather than paying for durability in a place that was never going to fail.

The grey scale, and what a fastness grade means
Colour fastness results are reported as a grade, and the grade comes from a grey scale. ISO 105-A02 covers the grey scale for assessing change in colour — how much the test specimen itself shifted — and ISO 105-A03 covers the grey scale for assessing staining, meaning how much colour transferred onto an adjacent white fabric. Both run from 1 to 5, where 5 means no perceptible change and 1 means severe change.
Two things follow from that. First, when a supplier says a fabric is “colourfast”, ask fastness to what, tested how, and at what grade — the word on its own carries no information. Second, staining matters as much as fading for uniforms: a deep colour that transfers onto a white collar or onto a pale garment in the same wash load causes more complaints than a modest shade change does.
The four fastness tests worth naming
- Washing — ISO 105-C06 covers colour fastness to domestic and commercial laundering. This is the headline number for any uniform that is washed weekly.
- Rubbing — ISO 105-X12 assesses colour transfer under dry and wet rubbing. It predicts the collar-fold and cuff problem, and it predicts whether a dark shirt will mark a light bag strap.
- Perspiration — ISO 105-E04 assesses fastness to acid and alkaline perspiration. In this climate it deserves more attention than it usually gets.
- Light — ISO 105-B02 covers fastness to artificial light using a xenon arc lamp. Relevant for anyone who spends part of the day outdoors or in a vehicle.
You do not need to commission all four for every order. Naming the ones that match how your team actually works gives you a concrete basis for comparing one uniform manufacturer in Malaysia against another — and it signals to the mill that colour performance is being looked at, which is often enough on its own.
Shrinkage is a measurement, not an accident
The formal name for shrinkage is dimensional change. ISO 6330 sets out standardised domestic washing and drying procedures for textile testing, and ISO 5077 sets out how the resulting dimensional change is determined. Together they let a fabric be described as “x% change after n specified wash cycles” rather than “shouldn’t shrink much”.
Three practical points follow. Cotton-rich woven fabrics carry the most residual shrinkage, and most of it appears in the first wash or two, mainly in the length. Fabrics can be pre-shrunk before cutting, which is why “pre-shrunk” is a specification worth asking for on any cotton-rich uniform. And where residual shrinkage is expected, the pattern should be cut with an allowance for it — a garment that fits perfectly on delivery and is short at the hem a month later was cut without one.
This is why sizing and shrinkage have to be handled in the same conversation. A size set fitted before the allowance is agreed is measuring the wrong garment. When we set out how we build a size grid, the shrinkage allowance is part of the same document, not a separate note.
Home wash, commercial laundry, industrial laundering
Who washes the uniform changes the specification completely, and it is the question most briefs forget to answer.

For that last row there is a dedicated standard: ISO 15797 sets out industrial washing and finishing procedures for testing workwear, precisely because a domestic wash test says very little about how a garment will survive a tunnel washer. If any part of your programme goes to an industrial laundry, say so at brief stage — the cloth, the thread, the buttons and the seam finish all change, and so does the sensible weave and fabric weight choices for that group.
The care label, and why the 2023 revision matters
Care labelling by symbol is governed by ISO 3758, and the current edition — ISO 3758:2023 — replaced the 2012 version. If your labels were artworked years ago and have simply been reordered ever since, they may be running an outdated symbol set. It is a five-minute check that nobody performs.
Beyond the symbols themselves, a uniform care label earns its place by answering the questions staff actually get wrong:
- Wash temperature — the single biggest cause of avoidable shrinkage and shade loss.
- Wash separately or with like colours — the fix for staining between a deep corporate colour and a white garment.
- No bleach — including the optical brighteners in many everyday detergents, which change coloured cloth over time.
- Dry in shade, inside out — the most useful line on a Malaysian care label, and rarely present. Direct sun on a wet coloured garment does more fading in a few afternoons than months of washing.
- Iron on reverse, avoid the logo — a hot iron directly on embroidery flattens the stitch; on a heat-applied logo it can do worse.
- Fibre composition and size code — the composition is required information, and a legible size code is what makes reissue and reorder possible two years later.
Issue the care guidance separately too. Nobody reads a neck label. A single printed card in the bag at handover — wash cold, inside out, shade dry, no bleach, iron on reverse — costs almost nothing and prevents most of the complaints in this article. Put it in the same bag as the garment, not in an email.
Damp air, mildew and the space between shifts
Malaysia’s climate is uniformly warm and humid year-round — METMalaysia notes that the annual temperature variation is under 2 °C for most of the country — and that constancy is precisely the problem. There is no dry season in which a damp cupboard airs out.
Two habits cause most of the mildew spotting we are asked about. The first is a garment worn during a shift, folded into a locker or bag still slightly damp, and left overnight. The second is buffer stock stored in polythene in a store room that never gets air. Neither is a fabric fault, and neither can be specified away — but both are avoidable. Hang worn garments rather than folding them, store spare stock somewhere ventilated rather than sealed, and rotate the buffer so that nothing sits for a year untouched. Once mildew spotting has developed on a coloured cloth it is very difficult to remove without also removing colour.
Six checks to run on the pre-production sample
You do not need a laboratory to catch the most expensive problems. Run these on the approval sample, before bulk production is released.
- Measure it, then wash it, then measure it again. Body length, sleeve length and chest across, recorded before and after one wash following the proposed care label. This is a shrinkage check anyone can do with a tape measure.
- Rub a damp white cloth firmly across the darkest area. If colour comes off onto the white cloth, you have a rubbing-fastness problem that will show up on collars, bags and vehicle seats.
- Wash it with a white garment. A crude staining test, but a decisive one. If the white picks up colour, the whole programme needs a wash-separately instruction at minimum.
- Hold it up to a window and to a bright light. Opacity problems are always found at the wrong moment. Check the body, the shoulders and the seat area if the programme includes trousers or skirts.
- Look at the logo after the wash, not before. Puckering around embroidery, a lifting edge on a heat-applied mark, or a colour shift in the thread all appear after the first wash, not on the sample bench.
- Keep a sealed, unwashed reference garment. Store one untouched sample with the approved swatch. It is the only fair reference you will have when someone says next year’s batch looks different.
That last one is the quietly important one. A sealed reference garment turns a subjective argument into a comparison — and it is the foundation of the dye-lot control on reorders that keeps year two looking like year one.
Frequently asked questions
How long should a corporate uniform shirt last?
It depends almost entirely on how many garments each person is issued and how they are laundered. A team issued enough garments to rotate through the week, washing cool and drying in shade, will get far more service life from the same cloth than a team issued one or two and washing hot. Plan the issue count before you judge the fabric.
Do you provide test reports?

Why did one department’s shirts fade faster than another’s?
Usually laundering, sunlight exposure or colour depth rather than the fabric itself. A team that dries garments outdoors in direct sun, or washes hot, will fade first. Deeper and more saturated shades also show change more visibly than mid-tones do.
Should we choose embroidery or printing for durability?
Embroidery is the durable, premium choice for daily-wear uniforms, and it is what we recommend for chest logos and names. Silkscreen and heat transfer suit larger or full-colour branding, particularly across the back. We will advise per garment, because the fabric affects the answer.
