Decal Plate Printing Malaysia: What Really Wears a Logo Off a Plate
A plate is the only branded item in a corporate gift programme that is deliberately attacked with a steel blade. Every other item in the catalogue is carried, worn, plugged in or drunk from. A plate gets a fork dragged across it, twice a minute, for the length of a meal — and then it gets a second plate dropped on top of it. When a plate’s logo goes patchy after a few months, buyers almost always blame the wash. In our experience the wash is rarely the culprit. Three mechanical actions do the damage, and only one of them happens in a sink.
This article is about abrasion on a flat, rigid eating surface: what rubs a decoration off a plate, where each attacker lives, and how to specify around it. The three things that abrade a plate
Rank them by how much surface energy each one delivers to the decorated area over a year, and the order surprises most buyers.
1. The cutlery contact zone
Watch anyone eat off a round plate and the pattern repeats: fork tines and knife edge sweep the flat floor of the well and stop against the inner shoulder where the well meets the rim. That shoulder is the highest-pressure line on the plate, because it is what a knife is pushed against to cut. On a plate destined for eating, the shoulder ring is the worst place to put fine artwork and the well floor is the second worst.
2. The foot ring of the plate stacked on top
This is the one nobody specifies for, and in a canteen, a café or a busy office pantry it does more damage than every fork in the building. Turn a ceramic plate over. The ring it stands on is usually left unglazed — it has to be, because a fully glazed foot fuses to the kiln shelf during firing. Unglazed fired clay is abrasive: run a fingernail across it and it feels like a fine sanding block. Now stack thirty of those plates. Every plate in the column has a sanding block resting on its well floor, under the weight of everything above it, and every time the stack is picked up, shuffled or nudged, that block turns a few degrees.
The result is a circular scuff band in the well, concentric with the plate and roughly the diameter of the foot above it, on plates that have never been eaten off. Storeroom plates come out of a cupboard already worn. That is why the foot ring, not the fork, is the first thing we inspect when a client returns a plate that has gone dull.
3. The wash, which does something quite different
A dishwasher does not scrub a plate; it attacks chemically. Alkaline detergent, held at temperature and recirculated, etches the soft low-temperature glass that bonds a surface-applied decoration to the glaze beneath it. On a flat glazed face that shows up as a loss of gloss first — the print goes chalky before any of it lifts — and it shows fastest at the outer edge of a printed shape, where the bonding layer is thinnest. It never removes a decoration fired into the glaze, because there is no soft bonding layer to attack: the decoration and the glaze are the same piece of glass. That single sentence is the whole durability question for a plate.
Where the decoration actually sits — ranked by abrasion, not by wash
Four decoration positions cover almost everything a Malaysian corporate buyer will be offered. The differences are physical, not marketing.

The one-line rule. If the artwork will ever sit under food, it must be in-glaze, under-glaze or moulded into melamine. If it is on top of the glaze, keep it on the outer rim face or the back, where neither a fork nor a foot ring can reach it.
The foot-ring test: thirty seconds on a sample plate
Our production team runs this on every ceramic plate sample before we let a client sign a durability claim. You need two identical sample plates and a window.
Step 1. Turn one plate over and drag a fingernail across the foot ring. If it feels like fine sandpaper, the foot is unglazed and unground — the common, cheaper finish.
Step 2. Stack the second plate on the first, press down with the flat of one hand, and rotate it a quarter turn and back, twenty times.
Step 3. Lift it off and tilt the lower plate towards a window so the light rakes across the well at a shallow angle. Do not look at it flat-on under a ceiling light — that hides everything.
Step 4. Look for a matt circular band. If twenty turns have already dulled the glaze, that plate will look tired inside its first quarter in a busy pantry.
Step 5. Repeat over a printed area. If any pigment transfers onto the foot ring above, the decoration is on-glaze and it is in the wrong zone.
Two fixes follow, and you can ask for both by name. A ground and polished foot ring — the fired foot passed over an abrasive wheel until smooth — removes most of the problem at source. A stacking interleaf, a thin felt or foam disc between plates in storage, handles the rest. Whether the material suits the job at all is a separate question, answered in whether the plate should be ceramic or melamine in the first place.
Metal marking: the grey streaks that are not damage
Sooner or later a client photographs a plate covered in grey pencil-like streaks and asks whether the glaze has cracked. It has not. This is metal marking: stainless cutlery is softer than fired glaze, so a fork dragged across a microscopically rough surface leaves metal behind. The marks are deposits sitting on the plate, not scratches in it.
Three things follow. They usually come off — a mild cream cleaner and a soft cloth lifts most of them, and it is worth telling recipients once rather than fielding complaints later. More useful at specification stage: matt and satin glazes mark far more than gloss, because the matt effect comes from a micro-rough surface and that roughness is what grips the metal. A fashionable matt-white plate is a beautiful object and a poor eating surface. And a plate can be specified with a matt outer rim for looks and a glossy well for service — buyers rarely think to ask.
Melamine fails in a completely different way
Because melamine decoration is fused beneath a clear surface layer during moulding rather than applied on top afterwards, the print itself effectively cannot be worn off. What wears is the clear layer above it. A serrated knife on melamine does not shave metal — it cuts. Each cut is a shallow score, and a face full of shallow scores scatters light, so a melamine plate does not go patchy; it goes cloudy and grey, uniformly, and the logo dims with the rest of the surface.
That has a practical consequence for artwork. Cloudiness swallows subtlety: a pale tint, a thin keyline or a gradient that fades to nothing disappears visually long before it disappears physically. On melamine we push clients towards solid shapes and confident contrast rather than delicate detail — a decision that is easier once you have worked out where on the round face the artwork can safely sit.
Gold and metallic rims: beautiful, and in exactly the wrong place
A gilded rim lifts a commemorative plate more than any other single detail, and it is worth the money on a plate that will be displayed. On a plate that will be eaten off, understand what you are buying. Precious-metal banding is applied over the finished glaze and fired low, which makes it by definition the least abrasion-resistant decoration on the piece — and it sits on the rim, where diners park a knife and where the foot ring of the plate above lands in a stack.
Three lines for the brief if a gold or platinum rim is on the table: hand-wash only, never a microwave, and interleaved rather than bare-stacked. A metallic-look printed band is the alternative — less shine under banquet lighting, but it survives a service floor.
Five lines to put in the purchase order
- State the decoration position by name — on-glaze, in-glaze, under-glaze or in-mould — not just “printed” or “full colour”.
- State the glaze finish of the well separately from the rim: gloss well, whatever finish you like on the rim face.
- Ask in writing whether the foot ring is ground, and request it if the plates will be stacked in service.
- Confirm whether any precious metal is present anywhere on the piece, including a thin hairline band.
- Require an approval sample decorated by the same method as the production run, not a printed visual on paper.

Frequently asked questions
How can I tell which decoration position a sample plate uses?
Close your eyes and run a fingernail slowly over the edge of a printed shape. A raised edge you can feel means it is sitting on top of the glaze. Feel nothing at all and it has been fired into or under the glaze. Then tilt the plate to the light: a decoration under glaze has the same gloss as the bare plate around it.
Why did our plates dull in storage without being used?
Almost always the unglazed foot ring of the plates stacked above them. Check for a circular matt band in the well that matches the foot diameter. Interleaving the stack, or specifying a ground foot ring on the next order, removes it.
Can a printed plate be put in a microwave?
A plain ceramic plate with in-glaze or under-glaze decoration and no metallic content generally can. Anything carrying gold, platinum or a metallic-effect lustre must not, because the metal reflects the field and can spark. Melamine must never be microwaved at all — it is a thermoset plastic and heat damages it from the inside.
