Between the Bands: Where a Logo Can Actually Sit on a Hi-Vis Vest
Most branded apparel starts with the logo and finds a place for it. A hi-vis vest works the other way round. The reflective bands are placed by geometry before anyone opens the artwork file, and whatever panel is left over is the branding area — usually a strip about the height of a business card across the chest, and a wider, more generous window high on the back. Send us a tall, square logo for the chest of a two-band vest and there is no version of that mockup that works.
This article is the placement conversation we have with almost every new safety-vest client, written down: which panels actually exist on a standard sleeveless vest, the three tests a logo has to pass before it can go anywhere, and what silkscreen, heat transfer and embroidery each do when they meet fluorescent polyester — including the reason a crisp white logo on a fluorescent orange vest can turn peach three weeks after delivery.
The bands are placed first. The logo lives in what is left
Under EN ISO 20471 the retroreflective bands on a torso garment are required to be at least 50 mm wide, to encircle the torso within roughly 20 degrees of horizontal, to sit at least 50 mm apart where two bands are used, and to connect over each shoulder so the wearer reads side-on as well as front and back. The lowest band has to sit clear of the bottom hem.
Those requirements are not decoration guidance, but they function as it. Once two horizontal bands and two shoulder runs are fixed on a sleeveless vest, the fluorescent fabric is cut into four usable windows — and each one has a different shape, a different maximum logo height and a different practical decoration method. Two further constraints sit on top: nothing opaque may be placed over the tape, because print kills retroreflection stone dead, and nothing may reduce the fluorescent background area the garment’s class depends on. That second point rules out the large, solid, full-front print that works so well on other apparel.
The four windows on a standard sleeveless vest

Windows vary by style. On a zip-front or multi-pocket vest the front is broken up further, and the exact printable dimensions are confirmed on your digital mockup against the actual garment.
Three tests every logo has to pass
Before we lay artwork onto a vest template, we run it through the same three checks. You can run them yourself on a brand guideline PDF in about a minute, and it will save a round of mockups.
1. The gap test. Measure the height of the window you want to use. If your logo’s height at a legible size exceeds it, the logo does not go there — and shrinking it until it fits usually destroys the strapline first. A wide, short lockup almost always beats a stacked one on a vest.
2. The tape test. Overlay the logo on the vest template. If any part of it touches or crosses a reflective band, it moves. There is no negotiation here: opaque decoration on tape switches that section off.
3. The background test. Solid ink covering a large share of the fluorescent panel eats into the background area the vest’s class depends on. Keep prints proportionate, and prefer outlined or knocked-back treatments over big solid blocks on the fluorescent fabric.
Most rejected artwork fails test one, not test two. Malaysian corporate logos are frequently a stacked mark with Bahasa Malaysia and English lines beneath — beautiful on a letterhead, unreadable at 40 mm tall. The fix is usually a horizontal variant supplied by your brand team, not a smaller version of the primary lockup.
What each method does to hi-vis polyester
Silkscreen
Hard-wearing, economical over a full run, and the natural choice for a bold one- or two-colour mark on the upper back of a solid-polyester vest. It needs a flat, closed surface, so it belongs on solid fabric or on the solid yoke panel some mesh vests carry. Screening directly onto open mesh pushes ink through the apertures and onto whatever is behind it, which is why printing onto open mesh rather than solid fabric changes the method before it changes the artwork.
Heat transfer and DTF
The most flexible option on vests: full colour, fine detail, small quantities per design, and the only sensible way to run individual names and roles. It applies as a film, so it works on mesh where screen ink cannot. The trade-off is heat — the press has to reach bonding temperature on a fabric that reacts badly to it, which is the subject of the next section.
Embroidery
The most durable and the most premium-looking, and the usual pick for a supervisor or executive vest. It is also the most constrained. Stitching needs a stable ground: on open mesh it requires backing and can still distort, and dense stitch counts add weight and a warm patch to a garment bought for airflow. Embroidery is a left-chest decision on a hi-vis vest, not a full-back one, and fine text below roughly 4 mm cap height will not resolve cleanly in thread.
Reflective heat-transfer logo
A logo applied in retroreflective film, so the brand itself returns headlight and torchlight. It looks excellent at night and reads as a serious piece of kit. Two honest caveats: it is grey-silver in daylight, so it will not carry a corporate colour, and it is branding rather than protection — a reflective logo does not substitute for the bands. Understanding how retroreflective tape is built and how it wears is worth doing before you commit a whole fleet to a reflective mark, because a reflective logo ages the same way tape does.
Why a white logo on a fluorescent vest turns peach
This is the failure our production team watches for most closely on hi-vis work, and it does not show up on the day of production. It shows up two or three weeks later, in a warehouse, and by then the whole order is decorated.
Polyester is coloured with disperse dyes that sit inside the fibre. Apply enough heat — and a heat press applying a transfer comfortably reaches it — and those dyes turn gaseous and move. If there is a light-coloured ink or film sitting on the surface, the dye migrates into it. Migration is generally associated with press temperatures above roughly 150 °C, and it is worst on deep, saturated colours. Fluorescent yellow and fluorescent orange-red are exactly that: intensely saturated polyester dyes, on a garment whose entire purpose is colour intensity.
The result is a white logo that yellows, or a white logo on orange that drifts to peach, sometimes over days rather than instantly. It is not a wash fault and it cannot be cleaned out. The countermeasures are all decided before production, not after:
- Use a barrier or blocker-grade transfer film designed to stop dye migration, rather than a standard film.
- Press at the lowest temperature and dwell that will still bond, rather than the fastest settings.
- Where the brand allows, avoid pure white and very pale tints directly on fluorescent fabric — a dark outline or a knocked-back version is far more stable.
- Run a pre-production sample on the actual garment, then leave it a few days before signing off. Migration that has not appeared yet is still coming.
Ask for this by name: when you approve a mockup for a fluorescent vest with a light-coloured logo, ask specifically whether a dye-migration barrier film is being used, and ask to see the pre-production sample after it has sat for a few days rather than straight off the press. It is a two-line question that has saved entire runs.
A placement brief that survives production
Send these six things and a mockup usually comes back within about one business day rather than after three rounds of clarification. Every one of those clocks starts at artwork approval, so a clean brief is genuinely the fastest part of the schedule.
- Vector artwork (AI, EPS or PDF) with fonts outlined — and a horizontal variant if your primary lockup is stacked.
- The positions you want, in priority order, so we know what to sacrifice if a window is too small.
- Vest style and fabric, because mesh and solid panels take different methods.
- Whether individual names or roles are needed, and the list, if so.
- Your brand colours as reference values, plus whether a mono version is acceptable on fluorescent fabric.
- Your mobilisation or event date, so we can work backwards from it.
One more decision belongs at this stage rather than later: if different teams, contractors or visitors need to be told apart, settle that scheme now, because it changes what goes in the back window. Planning role and name strips across a mixed site at artwork stage is far cheaper than adding them to delivered stock. Your questions, answered
Can a logo be printed over the reflective tape on a safety vest?
No. Opaque ink or film over retroreflective tape stops that area returning light, so the logo goes in the fluorescent panels above or between the bands instead. If you want the brand itself visible at night, apply it as a separate reflective heat-transfer mark in one of those panels.
Can you embroider a logo on a mesh safety vest?
Embroidery on open mesh needs backing and can still distort, so it is best kept to a compact left-chest mark, or moved to a solid panel where the style has one. For a full-back mark on mesh, heat transfer is the more reliable route.
Why did our white logo change colour after delivery?
Almost certainly dye migration: heat from the press mobilised the polyester’s disperse dye, which then moved into the light-coloured film. It is prevented at production stage with a barrier-grade film, lower press temperatures and a pre-production sample left to stand for a few days — not fixed afterwards.
Can we print individual names and roles on each vest?
Yes — names, roles, numbers and department markings are all workable, usually as heat transfer on the right chest or in the back band gap. Send the list with the artwork; individual personalisation adds handling time, so it sits at the longer end of the production window.
