Why a Printed L-Shape Folder Scuffs: Surface Treatment, Matt vs Gloss and the Tape Test

Here is the failure that is almost never a printing fault and almost always blamed on one. Folders go into a bag with a pen, a bottle and a badge on a clip. Six hours later the logo has a dull grey smear across it and the solid colour has silvered along one edge. The ink did not fade. It was rubbed off — because on plastic, ink does not sink in. It sits on top, held there by a surface treatment that either worked or did not.

Anyone who has printed on paper carries an assumption they do not know they are carrying: that ink and substrate become one thing. Paper is fibrous and absorbent, so ink is drawn in and anchored. Polypropylene is smooth and inert, with nothing to absorb anything. The craft of printing an L-shape folder is making a coating stick to a surface that, left alone, repels it.

This article covers the surface treatment that decides whether your print survives the day, the four methods that genuinely run on a folder, why matt and gloss behave differently under conference lighting, and two tests you can run on a first-off sample in under a minute. Surface energy: the number nobody puts in the quotation

Whether a liquid spreads across a surface or beads up on it is governed by surface energy. Untreated polypropylene is a low-surface-energy material, sitting in the high twenties to low thirties in dyne units — which is why water beads on a plastic folder and permanent marker wipes off with a fingernail. Most inks and coatings need around 38 dynes or above before they will wet out and bond. Print onto untreated sheet and the ink looks fine off the press, then lifts as soon as anything abrades it.

The industry fix is corona treatment: the sheet passes under a high-voltage discharge that oxidises the surface layer and raises its energy into the range where ink will key. It is invisible, and it is the single most important step in the job.

Corona treatment decays. The raised surface energy is not permanent; it falls away over weeks in storage, faster in heat and humidity — exactly what a Malaysian warehouse supplies. Sheet left sitting too long before printing gives poor adhesion although nothing visible has changed. Printers verify it with dyne test pens: a marker of known surface tension is drawn across the sheet, and the line must hold as a continuous stroke rather than pulling back into droplets. It takes seconds, and you are entitled to ask whether it was done on your sheet.

Four ways to get a logo onto a folder

Different methods put the ink in different places relative to the surface, and that determines how the folder ages. This is how our production team matches artwork to method.

Read down the second column and the durability ranking writes itself. Anything printed on the outside is only as tough as the coating over it; anything laminated is, for practical purposes, un-scuffable, because abrasion never reaches the ink.

The bag is an abrasion test nobody designed

Put a folder into a tote with a metal pen, a bottle and a badge on a clip, then walk for a few hours. The contents shift constantly against the printed face with real pressure behind them, and a raised silkscreen ink film is the highest point on that surface, so it takes every contact first.

Three defences, and they combine. A seal — an overprint varnish across the printed area, a sacrificial layer between ink and world. A method that buries the ink, which is what lamination does. And a design decision that costs nothing: keep large solid dark areas away from the centre of the outer face, where contact is heaviest. A dark navy panel shows every silver scratch; the same logo on a lighter ground ages invisibly.

One production detail explains a defect that looks like a printing error and is not. If printed sheets are boxed before the ink or varnish has fully cured, the pressure of the stack in a warm store room makes the face of one folder stick to the back of the next — what printers call blocking. Separated later, the ink looks patchy or lifted. The cause is packing too early.

Matt or gloss: a lighting decision, not a taste one

Buyers usually choose between matt and gloss on a screen, in an office. The folder will be seen somewhere else: under the hard downlights of a hotel ballroom, on a registration table beneath ceiling spots, or in a photograph taken with a flash.

Gloss

Gloss gives saturation: dark colours go deeper, images look sharper, and the folder reads as expensive on a table. It also mirrors the ceiling — under a downlight a gloss face throws a hot spot straight back and part of your artwork disappears into glare at exactly the angle a person holds it. Worse for anything handled, gloss shows fingerprints immediately, and in Malaysian humidity hands are rarely dry. A gloss folder that has been through a registration queue looks smeared by mid-morning.

Matt and frosted

A matt or frosted surface scatters light instead of reflecting it, so there is no hot spot and no visible fingerprinting. Fine scratches disappear into the texture rather than catching the light, which is why a matt folder ages far better in a bag. The cost is contrast — deep colours lose a little depth. For most corporate work that trade is worth taking, which is why our default for anything handled by many people in one day is matt or frosted, with gloss reserved for presentation pieces that live on a desk.

A three-minute finish check in your own office

Take both sample finishes into the room the folders will be used in. Hold each at arm’s length, tilt through the angle a person holds a document, and watch where the ceiling light lands. Then press a thumb onto each face and look again. Three minutes under the real lighting beats an hour of digital visuals.

Colour on a sheet that is not white

A folder is very often clear, frosted or a brand colour, and that changes what colour management means. Printing inks are largely translucent, so whatever sits behind them contributes to what you see. On a clear sheet, printed colour takes on whatever the folder rests against — brand red over a document set looks different from the same red held up to a window.

The remedy is an opaque white underbase printed first, with colour laid on top. It works, but it adds a print pass, makes the printed area slightly thicker and so more vulnerable at a fold, and produces a visible white halo if registration between the white and colour layers drifts — which is why fine hairlines and small reversed-out type are risky on a coloured folder. Expect a brand colour to land close rather than exact, too: a Pantone reference was defined for ink on coated paper, and the same ink on treated plastic film reads differently. If a colour is critical, say so at brief stage so it can be checked on the actual substrate.

Where the artwork meets the fold

The closed edge of an L-shape folder is a hinge, and a hinge is the worst possible place for a hard coating. Every opening cycle stretches the outer surface of that crease. A thin ink film flexes with it; a heavy ink build or a cured digital layer can micro-crack along the line, producing a fine pale hairline that looks like a print defect and is really a mechanical one.

Two rules follow. Keep critical artwork — the logo, the wordmark, anything with a fine edge — away from the fold. And if the design requires solid colour across the crease, say so at the outset so ink build and folding sequence can be planned around it. This is where gauge and decoration meet, because a brittle sheet that whitens at the fold takes the print with it; if the material is not yet settled, read the micron gauge and where the sheet splits alongside this one.

Two tests to run on the first-off sample

  1. The tape pull. Press a strip of ordinary clear office tape firmly across the printed area, smooth it with a thumbnail, leave it for a count of ten, then pull it off sharply at a shallow angle and look at the tape. Nothing should be on it. Any pigment transfer means the ink is sitting on inadequately treated surface. This is the desk version of the cross-hatch adhesion test used in coatings work.
  2. The dry thumb rub. Rub the printed area hard with a dry thumb, twenty strokes, using real pressure. A properly sealed print will not change. If it hazes, dulls or picks up a shine, the seal coat is thin or absent.

Write the tape pull into your approval. “Print must pass a tape-pull with no transfer” is a testable acceptance criterion and far more useful in a supply agreement than “good quality printing”. Run both tests on the sample, and again on a folder taken at random from the delivered cartons.

Artwork preparation, and one question to settle first

Send vector artwork with fonts converted to outlines. Supply brand colours as Pantone references rather than screen values. Build in bleed if the design runs to the edge, keep type inside a comfortable safe area from the trim, and avoid hairlines below roughly a quarter of a point.

Settle one question before the artwork is finalised: how long should the design stay valid? A folder carrying a specific date is finished the day after the occasion; the same design without it can be issued again next quarter. Why does the print rub off my plastic folders?

Because polypropylene is non-absorbent and low in surface energy, so ink only bonds if the surface has been treated first — usually by corona discharge — and that treatment fades in storage. Add an overprint varnish, or choose a laminated construction, if the folders will be carried in bags.

Can you print full colour across the whole folder?

Yes. Full-colour printing turns the whole folder into a brand surface, front and back, with bleed to the edge. On a coloured or frosted sheet an opaque white base is printed first so the colours read true.

Matt or gloss for a conference folder?

Matt, in almost every case. It does not throw glare back at ballroom downlights, does not hold fingerprints, and light scuffing disappears into the texture. Keep gloss for presentation folders that stay on a desk.

Why is there a fine white line along the fold?

That is the coating micro-cracking as the crease flexes, sometimes with the sheet whitening underneath. Keep heavy ink builds and critical artwork off the fold line, and tell us at the outset if the design must cross it.
