A Logo on a Compound Curve: Where Branding Fits on a Mouse and How Long It Survives

Every logo is approved flat, on a screen, sitting square in a rectangle. Then it is applied to a dome that curves in two directions at once, split down the middle by a moulding seam, with a slot cut through it for the scroll wheel — and placed exactly where a palm will rest for eight hours a day.

A mouse is one of the least cooperative shapes in corporate gifting, and the gap between the flat approval and the curved object is where most disappointment comes from. This article maps the shell honestly: which zones can hold a mark, which method survives which curve, why the most visible position is the least durable one, and which finish we quietly steer clients away from for anything meant to last.

The short version

The largest area on a mouse is the palm rest, and it is the worst place to put a mark you want to keep. Curvature limits you to pad printing for most of the shell. Hand sanitiser, not abrasion, is what usually takes the logo off. And soft-touch coating feels best on day one and ages worst in this climate.

The shape you are actually printing on

Take the object apart in your head before you look at any artwork. The top of a mouse is a compound curve — it falls away front to back and side to side at once, so there is no flat plane on the hump. The upper and lower shells meet along a parting seam running the full perimeter, a channel is cut through the top for the scroll wheel, and either side of it the primary buttons are separated by moulded gaps. Many models add a button behind the wheel and an indicator window on the same face.

Set that against what decoration needs. Screen printing wants a flat plane. Digital and UV printing want close to flat, because the head sits at a fixed height. Pad printing is the one process that genuinely conforms: a soft silicone pad lifts ink from an etched plate and deforms around the shape as it presses down. Laser engraving follows a curve happily, but is limited by what the material does when the beam hits it.

The conclusion arrives immediately: the biggest, most visible surface is also the hardest to print well and the most punished by daily use.

The four zones, ranked honestly

The rear hump

The default request — it photographs best and it is what you see when the mouse sits idle. It is also the peak of the compound curve and the landing zone of the palm. A mark here needs pad printing, must stay narrow, and shows wear first.

The button faces

Flatter than the hump and visible in use, but narrow and interrupted. A wordmark cannot cross the wheel channel, and should not cross the gap between the buttons either — the halves flex independently, so anything spanning the split will not stay aligned.

The side flank

The most underrated zone on the product. The flank usually curves in one direction only, which pad printing handles predictably, and it is the face a colleague at the next desk sees. It takes far less contact than the top — the thumb rests rather than rubs. Small area, but the mark still crisp two years later is usually this one.

The mouse base and feet

Flat, generous, never touched — and never seen. The right home for a website, a campaign QR code or a batch reference; the wrong home for the brand. Do not let a supplier quietly move your logo here because it is the easy surface.

That last row matters more than it looks. Where the identity is complex — a gradient, fine type, several colours — the box carries it properly and the mouse carries a simplified mark. Forcing a whole identity onto a dome is how a good logo ends up a smudge.

What each decoration method can and cannot follow

  • Pad printing. The workhorse for mice, because the pad deforms around the shape. Spot colours in separate passes, a thin ink film, fine detail limited by how the pad releases into a tight corner. It sits on the surface, which is why it is the most vulnerable to what happens next.
  • UV and digital printing. Full colour and gradients in one pass, but it needs a near-flat surface — on a mouse, usually the base or the packaging. The ink film also has a thickness you can feel with a fingernail.
  • Laser engraving. Permanent and beautiful on bamboo and metal. On coated plastic the beam removes the top coat and shows whatever is underneath, so you accept the substrate colour rather than choose a brand colour — and consistency depends on how evenly that coating was applied.
  • Epoxy dome badge. A printed label sealed under a clear resin dome, applied to a flat or gently curved zone. Full colour, genuinely abrasion-resistant, and it survives the palm far better than ink. The trade-offs are a raised edge the hand can feel and an extra step in production.

What actually removes the logo, and it is not friction

Buyers assume printed marks rub off through abrasion. Abrasion contributes, but on a Malaysian office desk the dominant attacker is chemical and it arrives daily: alcohol-based hand sanitiser. Gel goes onto the hands, the hands go straight back onto the mouse while still damp, and the palm rest gets a solvent wipe several times a day for years. Solvent-thinned pad-print ink is exactly what dissolves.

Sunscreen and insect repellent behave the same way and reach a mouse more often than you would think. Add heat and humidity, which soften coatings and keep skin oils sitting on the surface, and the palm rest becomes the harshest few square centimetres on the gift.

Our rule, stated plainly: the most visible position on a mouse is the least durable one. If the brand must still be legible in year three, move the mark to the flank, switch to an epoxy dome or engraving, or accept that a hump print is a short-life impression and specify it knowingly. What we will not do is print onto a palm rest and let a client believe it is permanent.

Soft-touch is the one worth arguing about. It wins every sample-table comparison, which is why it keeps being specified — and in a climate this warm and humid it is the finish most likely to turn sticky on an object that stays in service for years. Where a client insists, we keep it to campaigns with a short horizon and put the mark on a hard-plastic flank rather than in the coating. For a long-life staff gift, textured plastic wins on every measure except the first handshake.

The artwork brief for a curved shell

These are the lines our team applies to every mouse mockup — and the fastest way to spot artwork that will not work while it is still an email rather than a carton.

  • Vector artwork, spot colours named. A raster file scaled up produces soft edges the pad will not resolve.
  • Keep the mark narrow across the steepest curve. A wide horizontal logo laid over a dome reads as bowed even when the pad transferred it perfectly. Stacking the lockup vertically usually solves it.
  • Never straddle the parting seam. Ink laid across a moulding line breaks along it, and the shell halves are never in perfect register anyway.
  • Hold a clear margin from the wheel channel and the button split. Nominate it in the brief and have it shown on the mockup.
  • Respect minimum line and gap. Hairline rules and thin reversed-out gaps fill in during transfer, turning a fine mark into a blob. Thicken them for the small format.
  • Orient for the person at the desk. State whether the logo reads correctly to the user looking down or to someone opposite — this gets assumed, and assumed wrong.
  • Approve on a photograph of the actual shell. A flat swatch proves nothing about a compound curve.

Settle these before the shell is locked, because they interact with the hardware: a dual-mode model carries a mode switch and an indicator that eat into the flatter zones. One more reason to make the dongle-versus-pairing decision before the artwork stage rather than after it.

The palm simulation: testing a decorated sample

A printed sample tells you nothing until you attack it. A few minutes answers the question a client asks in year two.

  • The sanitiser test. Put a pump of alcohol gel on your hand, rub it in until nearly dry, then use the mouse normally for a minute. Repeat over an afternoon. If the edges of the mark soften at all, you have your year-two answer today.
  • Dry thumb cycles. Rub the mark firmly with a dry thumb, counting to a hundred. Ink that dulls has poor adhesion, not just poor solvent resistance.
  • Tape pull at the edge. Press adhesive tape over the edge of the mark and lift it sharply. Any transfer of ink onto the tape is a rejection at sample stage.
  • Heat and light. Leave the sample on a sunny windowsill for a few days. Unstable colour and early surface change on coated shells both show up.
  • The seam check. Run a fingernail across the printed area. A ridge under the mark distorts it across the whole run, not just this unit.

Can we print a full-colour logo on the top shell?

Rarely as intended. The compound curve pushes you to pad printing in spot colours, and gradients do not survive it. Where a full-colour identity is essential, an epoxy dome badge on a gentler zone or full-colour decoration on the gift box carries it far better.

Should we choose soft-touch coating?

Only with your eyes open. It gives the best first impression of any finish and degrades fastest over the years an office mouse stays in service here. For a long-life staff gift we recommend textured plastic, with branding on a hard surface.
