Size 5, Size 4 or a Mini Size 3: The Ball That Gets Played With and the One on a Desk

Choosing a rugby ball size looks like a specification decision. It is really a promise. The moment a recipient realises the ball they have just been handed is noticeably smaller than the one they see on television, the gift quietly changes meaning — from equipment to souvenir. That is a perfectly good thing to give someone. It is a terrible thing for them to work out on their own, standing in a car park, holding it next to somebody else’s.

This article sets out what the sizes actually are in millimetres, what each one is genuinely for, how far each one travels on a desk, in a gift box and in a bag — and, at the end, the three sentences we suggest putting alongside a smaller ball so nobody has to discover its size by comparison. It is the honesty conversation that most size guides skip entirely.

The sizes, in numbers

Only one size is defined by law. World Rugby’s Law 2 fixes the senior match ball at 280–300 mm in length, 740–770 mm around the long way, 580–620 mm around the middle, and 410–460 g in weight. Everything below that is convention rather than regulation, so figures vary slightly between makers — the table gives the widely used values.

Read the length column first and the reaction is usually “that is not much difference”. Read the girth column and it becomes obvious: between a senior ball and a size 3 you lose only around 30 mm of length but a great deal of the ball’s fatness. That is why a size 3 in the hand does not feel like a slightly smaller size 5 — it feels like a different, stubbier object. Anyone who has played will notice immediately.

The question behind the question: will it be played with?

Almost every rugby ball order we see falls into one of two intentions, and buyers often have not separated them in their own minds.

The first is equipment: balls that go to a club, a school programme, a sports day or a training squad, and are expected to be thrown, kicked and left out in the weather. Here the size is not yours to choose — it is set by who is playing. Senior and open-age teams need size 5. School programmes need whatever their age bands need, which is usually a mix. Getting this wrong is not a stylistic error; a size 4 handed to an adult side is simply unusable in a match.

The second is artefact: balls that go into a gift box, onto a desk, into a trophy cabinet, or into the hands of guests at a launch. Here size is entirely yours to choose, and the smaller sizes are usually the better answer — not because they are cheaper but because a full-size ball is an awkward object to own if you have nowhere to put it. The footprint test nobody runs

Before you choose a size for a gift, work out where it is going to live. A ball is an unusually inconvenient shape: it will not stand up on its own, it rolls, and it takes up a disproportionate amount of any container it goes into. Size changes your artwork more than you expect

A rugby ball is built from four panels running the length of the ball, so the panel width is roughly a quarter of the girth. On a senior ball that is about 145–155 mm at the fattest point. On a size 3 it drops to roughly 134 mm, and on a midi to around 105 mm. Meanwhile the length shrinks far less. The net effect is that the panel does not simply scale — it becomes proportionally shorter and rounder as the ball gets smaller.

Practically, a horizontal wordmark laid out for a size 5 and then dropped onto a size 3 will run out of panel before it runs out of letters. Long company names, straplines and any lock-up that combines a symbol with text side by side are the first casualties. If your order includes more than one size, expect the artwork to need a separate treatment for the smallest one rather than a percentage reduction — a point that sits right alongside the panel-by-panel artwork placement map. Three questions that settle the size in five minutes

1. Will anyone play a real game with it? If yes, the age band decides the size and the conversation is over — size 5 for open-age, size 4 for the 10–14 band, size 3 below that. If no, go to question two.
2. Where will it be twelve months from now? A desk, a shelf, a display cabinet or a child’s toy box? Match the size to the surface it will occupy, not to the impression it makes on the day.
3. How does it leave the room? If recipients are carrying it home themselves alongside everything else they were given, smaller wins — every time, without exception.

Only once those are answered is it worth talking about grade and texture, because a display ball and a training ball want different things from their skin — which is a longer conversation about the grip texture you are paying for.

Being straight with recipients about what they are getting

This is the part that separates a gift people like from a gift people are faintly disappointed by, and it costs nothing to get right. If you have ordered a smaller ball, say so before anyone opens it. Not apologetically — descriptively.

Mixed-size orders, and ordering in Malaysia

Schools and youth programmes almost always need more than one size, and sponsors often want a full-size ball for the presentation photograph and something smaller for everyone else. Both are normal. What size rugby ball should I order for a corporate gift?

Size 3 is the usual sweet spot. It reads unmistakably as a rugby ball, sits comfortably on a desk beside a monitor, fits a standard gift box and goes into an ordinary backpack. Size 5 is the right call only when the ball is genuinely going to be played with, or when it exists to be photographed being handed over.

What is the difference between a size 4 and a size 5 rugby ball?

Is a mini rugby ball too small to print a logo on?

Not at all, but the layout has to be built for it. A midi panel is roughly 105 mm wide at its fattest and tapers to a point, so wide horizontal wordmarks and side-by-side lock-ups usually need to be restacked rather than shrunk. Your digital mockup shows the real area before you approve anything.
