Binding, Hem and Where a Singlet Actually Fails: A Ten-Minute Sample Inspection

When a singlet comes back to us as a complaint, the fabric is almost always fine. The print is usually fine. What has failed, on nearly every returned sleeveless garment our production team has examined, is a strip of material about four millimetres wide running around the armhole.

That strip is the binding, the shortest-lived component on the garment and the one nobody inspects, because inspection attention goes to the print. This article puts the attention back where the failures are: how a cut edge can be finished, why binding cracks and rolls before anything else, what a singlet hem does that a sleeved hem does not, and a ten-minute inspection you can run on a pre-production sample with a ruler and your hands.

It applies to every construction we make, from cotton singlet custom orders through to full sports bodies, because every one of them has the same problem: a great deal of exposed edge and nothing covering it.

A singlet is mostly edge

Count the finished edges on a sleeved top: neckline, two cuff hems, one bottom hem. Four, two of them short.

Now count them on a singlet: neckline, two full armholes, one bottom hem. On a size M body the two armhole curves alone run to roughly a metre of finished edge, and every centimetre is visible, unsupported and in contact with a moving arm. An unusually large share of the total stitching on a singlet is edge finishing rather than construction.

So the edge finish is not a detail. It is most of the garment’s quality, most of its cost of making and almost all of its failure modes. It interacts with the cut too: a deeper armhole means more edge to finish and more of it under tension, which is one more reason to settle the armhole measurement that decides the whole fit before anything is quoted.

Three ways to finish a cut edge, and what each one costs you

Two rules come out of that table. On any armhole deeper than about 24 centimetres, use a binding with recovery rather than a plain self-fabric strip, because a deep opening spends its life being stretched by an arm. And never accept a single-needle stitch on an armhole edge: one line of thread across a stretching knit breaks, and once one stitch goes the rest unzip along the curve.

Why the binding fails before anything else

Four mechanisms account for nearly every binding failure we see, and they are all visible on a sample if you know to look.

It was applied stretched

Binding should be cut shorter than the edge it covers, by a few per cent, so it eases the curve inwards. An operator working quickly pulls the strip flat instead. The garment leaves the factory looking correct and arrives with a wavy armhole, because the edge is now longer than the pattern intended.

The strip was cut in the wrong direction

A binding strip has to stretch along its length. Cut on the wrong grain of a knit it has little give, so the first person to pull the garment over their head takes the strain in the stitching rather than the fabric. That is the split at the neckline on day one.

The needle cut the knit

A fine polyester or combed cotton jersey is easily damaged by the wrong needle point. A sharp needle punches through the yarn instead of pushing between the loops, leaving half-severed loops along the stitch line. It looks perfect on delivery and opens into a ladder after a few washes. The correct needle for a knit is a ball point — name it in the order.

The join was put in the wrong place

The strip has to start and end somewhere, and that join is the thickest, stiffest point on the edge. Placed at the underarm it sits in the highest-friction position on the garment. Ask for it at the side seam, low and out of the way, on both armholes.

Spotting all four on a flat sample

Run a thumb and finger round the whole armhole edge without stretching it. It should feel identical all the way round, lie flat and show no ripple.

Then find the join. If it is under the arm, ask for it to be moved. Then look along the stitch line under a light for a row of tiny holes in the fabric next to the thread — that is needle damage, and it will not survive the wash.

The hem, and why a singlet hem breaks differently

A hem on a sleeved garment is held in shape by the structure above it. On a singlet the body hangs from two narrow straps, so the hem swings, rides up and gets pulled at far more. Three things matter.

  • Coverstitch, not single needle. A twin-needle coverstitch puts two parallel lines of stitching on the face and a looper thread across the back, so the hem stretches and returns. A single line will pop on the first person who pulls the hem down over a waistband.
  • The side seam junction. The point where the hem crosses the side seam is a thickness change, and it is where hems start to unravel. A bar tack there costs almost nothing and prevents the most common hem failure we see.
  • Hem depth. Around 20 mm folded is right for a singlet. Shallower and the fold has nothing to hold onto; deeper and the hem stiffens the bottom of a lightweight garment so it stands away from the body.

On a seamless tubular body there is no side seam to reinforce, which sounds like an advantage until the hem stretches out and there is nothing anchoring it. On a tubular cotton singlet, ask specifically what holds the hem in shape.

Recovery: the property that decides whether it lasts a season

Stretch is easy; every knit stretches. Recovery — returning to the original dimension after repeated stretching — separates a singlet that still fits at the end of a season from one with permanently flared armholes.

Recovery lives in three places: the body fabric, the elastane content of the binding, and how much the binding was stretched at application. The third is workmanship, so it is the one to check — and it takes two minutes.

The ten-cycle recovery check

Mark two points 10 cm apart across the armhole binding with a fabric marker. Stretch that section firmly to roughly one and a half times its length and release. Do it ten times at a steady pace, then measure again immediately.

A binding that has returned to within about 2 mm of 10 cm is behaving. One that measures 10.5 cm or more after ten cycles will be visibly flared after a season of wear and washing. Repeat on the neckline. This takes two minutes and it is the single most predictive test on a sleeveless sample.

The order in which a singlet fails

Across the sleeveless garments our team has inspected, failures arrive in a consistent sequence. The order tells you where to spend inspection time.

  1. Armhole binding loses recovery and flares. First, and usually within one season of regular wear.
  2. Armhole binding cracks or splits, most often at the join or wherever needle damage started a ladder.
  3. Neckline binding follows, driven by being pulled over the head rather than by wear.
  4. Hem stitching pops at the side seam junction, where the thickness changes.
  5. Print or panel artwork degrades — usually last, and usually blamed first.
  6. Body fabric fails. Rare inside the life of an event or season garment.

Notice that the decoration sits fifth. Buyers overwhelmingly inspect the print and skip the edges, which is exactly backwards. The edges are where a sleeveless garment lives or dies, and where a mark can safely sit is a separate question covered under strap width and neck drop on a sleeveless garment.

The ten-minute pre-production inspection

Run this on the pre-production sample, before the bulk is cut. Everything here needs a ruler, a bright light and your hands. Nothing needs a laboratory.

Failing any of items 1 to 6 is a reason to ask for a corrected sample rather than to accept with a note. All six are process settings, so they repeat identically across every piece in the run — a fault on the sample is a fault on all of them. Why did the armhole on our singlets go wavy after a few washes?

Almost certainly because the binding was applied stretched. It should be cut shorter than the edge it covers so it eases the curve in. Applied at full length or pulled, the finished edge is longer than the pattern and flutters as soon as the fabric relaxes.

What is binding, and is it better than a folded hem on the armhole?

Binding is a narrow strip folded over the raw edge and stitched through. On an armhole it is usually better than a simple fold, because a fold has to ripple to follow a curve while a strip can be eased in. On a straight edge such as the bottom hem, a folded and coverstitched finish is the stronger choice.

How do we check a sample without a laboratory?

Use the ten-item list above. The two that catch the most problems are the ten-cycle recovery check on the armhole binding and a look along the stitch line under a bright light for needle damage. Between them they take about four minutes.

Do cotton singlets need a different edge finish from polyester ones?

Usually yes. Cotton jersey has less natural recovery, so a plain self-fabric binding on a cotton armhole flares sooner. On cotton bodies we prefer a binding with some elastane content, or a rib strip, particularly on deeper armholes.
