The 1 Litre Bowl That Serves 350ml: Capacity Before You Sign Off 300 Pieces
Fill a bowl to exactly half its depth and you have not filled it halfway. On the shapes we handle, half depth gives you between thirty-four and thirty-six per cent of the stated volume. A one-litre bowl at half depth is holding around 350ml. That is not a manufacturing tolerance or a rounding error — it is what happens when the walls lean outwards, and it is the single most common reason a bowl order arrives looking smaller than the specification promised.
A cup or a tumbler does not behave this way. A straight-sided vessel gives you half its volume at half its height, so the number on the quotation is close to the number in the hand. A bowl is a taper, and taper compounds. The volume of a slice at the top of a bowl is far larger than the volume of a slice at the bottom, because the top slice is wider in both directions at once.

Three different numbers, all called “capacity”
Before any table is useful, the three figures have to be separated, because catalogues use one word for all of them.
Rim-full volume. Water level with the very top edge. This is almost always the figure in the product name. Nobody can lift it, carry it or eat from it.
Working volume. Filled to a level that can be carried across a room without a spill. For an open bowl we allow roughly two centimetres of clear wall above the liquid, because a bowl has no lid and no shoulder to hold the contents in.
Served volume. What a person actually puts in it. Almost always less again, because people fill a bowl by eye to somewhere near the visual halfway point.
The gap between the first and the third is where disappointment lives. It is also entirely predictable, which means it can be designed around instead of discovered on delivery day.
The taper table: what our own shapes lose
These figures come from measuring internal rim diameter, internal base diameter and internal depth on the bowl shapes in our range, then calculating the volume at three fill levels. Nothing here is a guess; it is the geometry of a tapered vessel.

Two things fall out of that table. The first is that a shallow bowl loses proportionally more to the top two centimetres — the rice bowl gives up half its volume, while the deep mixing bowl gives up under a third. The second is the half-depth column, which is remarkably consistent at roughly a third. Whatever the bowl, if a person fills it by eye to the halfway mark, they are serving a third of the stated capacity.
The one-third rule. As a first pass for any tapered bowl, assume a person will serve about a third of the rim-full figure. If the serve you have in mind is 300ml of soup, you are looking for a bowl described as somewhere near 900ml, not one described as 350ml.
Same litres, three different bowls
Volume alone does not describe a bowl. Three bowls can all be honestly quoted at roughly 1.15 litres and be useful for entirely different things, because diameter and depth trade against each other.

Notice the working-volume column. The deep narrow bowl keeps three-quarters of its stated capacity once you leave a carry margin; the wide shallow one keeps under half. If the brief involves anything wet, depth is not a style preference — it is the difference between a useful gift and an ornament. And the moment a bowl gets deep, the wall gets tall enough to matter to the hand holding it, which is how depth changes the heat that reaches a bare hand.
Sizing a mixing bowl set by task, not by litres
A four-piece set is usually described by four volumes, which tells a recipient nothing. Described by task, the same set becomes obvious.

Written this way, a set brief stops being a list of litres and becomes a description of a kitchen. It also explains why the largest bowl in a set is always the one that looks over-specified in a photograph and is the first one used in practice. The fill test: eight minutes on a sample
Every claim above can be checked on one sample bowl with a measuring jug and a marker pen. Our production team runs this before a bowl spec is signed off, and it takes less time than reading the quotation.
- Fill the bowl to the brim from a measuring jug, counting as you go. That is the rim-full figure, and it should match the quotation within a few per cent.
- Empty it. Refill to two centimetres below the rim. That is your working volume — write it on a sticky note on the outside.
- Pick the bowl up with one hand and walk ten paces. If it spills, the carry margin needs to be three centimetres, not two, and your usable volume just dropped again.
- Empty it, then ask a colleague who has not seen the numbers to fill it “for lunch”. Measure what they poured. That is the served volume, and it is the number your recipient will experience.
- Compare step four with step one. If the gap embarrasses the specification, size up before the order is placed, not after.
Step four is the one that surprises people. In our experience the “fill it for lunch” figure lands close to the half-depth column of the taper table almost every time, which is why that column is in this article at all. It is also the step that settles arguments inside a buying team without anyone having to trust a supplier’s figure, because everyone in the room watched the jug.
Run the test on the shortlisted shape before artwork is drawn, not after. A size change after approval restarts the mockup round and pushes the whole job further into the 20 to 30 working days of production, which is the point at which a Hari Raya or Chinese New Year handover date starts to look tight.
What to put on the quotation request
Ask for four numbers instead of one, and a bowl enquiry stops being ambiguous: internal rim diameter, internal base diameter, internal depth, and the fill method used to arrive at the stated volume. Any supplier who can answer all four has measured a physical sample. Any supplier who can only answer the last one is quoting from a catalogue.
Those same three dimensions also determine how much printable wall you have, since the usable band on a bowl sits between the rim and the curve — which is where printing inside the well of a deep bowl becomes a real option rather than an afterthought. Settle the size first, then the decoration; doing it the other way round costs a round of mockups.

Why does my one-litre bowl hold so much less soup than expected?
Because the litre figure is measured to the very rim, and the top of a tapered bowl is its widest, highest-volume section. Leave the two centimetres of clear wall that carrying soup requires and you lose roughly forty per cent on a typical shape.
