A Torch Is Only as Good as Its Worst Spec: Lumens, Runtime and the Beam You Actually Get
Two torch samples arrive for the same enquiry. Both say 500 lumens on the box. Switch them on in a dark stairwell and one throws a usable disc of light down two flights; the other makes a bright, shapeless wash that dies about four metres out. Neither supplier lied. They simply quoted the one number that says least about how a torch behaves.
A torch is the most specification-heavy item in a safety gift range and the one buyers approve on the fewest specifications. Lumens get compared, everything else gets skipped, and the recipient finds out. This is the way our team reads a torch datasheet before a run is quoted, in the order the numbers actually matter.
Nothing here touches freight or certification paperwork — that is a separate conversation with its own timeline. This is about whether the torch is any good in the hand. The number on the box is often measured at the emitter
A lumen figure describes total light output. The question buyers never ask is where it was measured. An LED manufacturer publishes an output for the bare emitter at a given current. Put that emitter behind a reflector and a lens, inside a body with imperfect thermal contact, and what leaves the front of the torch is meaningfully less.
The industry answer to this is the FL1 standard published by ANSI and NEMA, which defines how torch performance should be measured and reported: out-the-front lumens, peak beam intensity, beam distance, runtime, impact resistance and water resistance, each with a defined method. A torch quoted against FL1 has been measured as a finished product. A torch quoted with a bare lumen number and nothing else has usually not.
One line to add to every torch enquiry
Ask whether the figures are quoted to ANSI/NEMA FL1, and ask for all six values rather than one. A supplier who has them will send them. A supplier who has not will send a marketing sheet, which is itself a useful answer.
This costs nothing, adds no lead time, and separates two torches that look identical in a photograph faster than any sample can.
Lumens, candela and beam distance are three different things
Lumens measure how much light there is in total. Candela measure how concentrated it is at the brightest point of the beam. Beam distance is derived from candela and describes how far the light reaches before it fades to roughly the brightness of a full moon — a defined, if generous, benchmark rather than a useful working distance.
Those three numbers pull in different directions, which is why 500 lumens can look so different in two hands. A wide flood spreads the same lumens over a large angle, giving low candela and a short beam distance but excellent close-up coverage. A tight beam concentrates them, giving high candela and long reach but a small hot circle and almost no peripheral light.
Neither is better. They are answers to different questions, and the question is set by your audience rather than by the specification.

Runtime is quoted at the mode nobody uses
The runtime figure on a box is almost always for the lowest output mode, and often to a definition most buyers do not know: under FL1, runtime is measured until output falls to ten per cent of the initial reading. A torch can therefore be “running” for eight hours while being nearly useless for six of them.
There is a second effect that catches people out. Small torches at high output produce more heat than a small body can shed, so many step down automatically after a short period on turbo — sometimes within a couple of minutes. That behaviour is sensible engineering and it is rarely mentioned on the packaging. Ask for the runtime at the mode you intend the recipient to use, not the headline mode.
If a torch is going to a guard, a marshal or a technician who will run it continuously, ask two questions: what is the output after thirty minutes, and does it step down automatically. Those two answers describe the real product. The same instinct — testing the claim rather than the sleeve — is what we apply to the steel and edge finish on a tool card.
The body decides whether it survives the first drop
Most gift torches are either anodised aluminium alloy or moulded plastic. Aluminium is stiffer, sheds heat far better, takes a hard anodised finish and dents rather than cracking. Plastic is lighter, cheaper, absorbs impact by flexing, and will not sink heat, so a plastic body limits sustained output more than the LED does.
Drop behaviour is not really about the tube at all. It is about the lens retaining ring, the reflector seat and the switch. A torch that survives a fall onto concrete and then flickers has usually shifted the battery contact spring or cracked the switch boot, not broken the body. FL1 includes an impact-resistance figure expressed in metres, and it is worth asking for.
Two practical body checks take under a minute on a sample. Roll it across a flat table — a plain cylinder rolls off a bonnet or a bench and lands lens-first, which a flat spot, a clip or a hexagonal head prevents. Then switch it on and squeeze the head and tail firmly. If the beam flickers under hand pressure, contact is marginal before the torch has even left the office.
Water resistance: IPX4 is a rain rating, IPX7 is an accident rating
Ingress protection is defined in IEC 60529 and written as two characters. For torches only the second matters, and an X in the first position simply means the dust figure was not tested. IPX4 covers splashing from any direction. IPX7 covers temporary immersion. IPX8 covers continuous immersion to a stated depth.
In Malaysian conditions the honest specification is usually IPX4. That covers what a torch actually meets: a downpour on the way to the car, a wet hand, a humid boot. IPX7 matters if the recipient works near water, drains or boats, and it costs more because it requires proper O-rings and a sealed switch rather than a gasket and optimism.
One caveat worth putting in the insert card rather than the specification: rubber seals age, and a torch that arrives at IPX7 is not guaranteed to stay there for years in a hot car. Water resistance is a condition on delivery, not a permanent property.
Battery format is a usability decision
This is where most torch gifts are won or lost, and it has nothing to do with the light. The question is simple: what happens the first time the torch is flat, six months after your event, in the hands of somebody who has forgotten where it came from?

The eight-line torch specification request
Send these eight lines with an enquiry and three quotations become comparable for the first time.
- Out-the-front lumens, and whether the figure is quoted to ANSI/NEMA FL1.
- Peak beam intensity in candela and the resulting beam distance.
- Runtime at the mode you intend recipients to use, and whether the torch steps down automatically.
- Number of modes, the switching order, and whether it starts on high or low.
- Body material, finish, and the impact-resistance figure in metres.
- Ingress protection rating, and whether the switch is sealed.
- Battery format, whether cells are included, and whether the recipient can replace them.
- Marking method and position, agreed against the switch, the threads and the knurl.
That last line matters more on a torch than on almost anything else in this range, because the surfaces that look best for a logo are frequently the surfaces that unscrew, seal or get gripped. We set out where a mark survives in branding an anodised torch body.
One final point that is not a specification at all. A torch is a genuinely useful gift and it needs no persuasion, so resist the temptation to dress it up with claims about safety outcomes on the packaging. How many lumens does a corporate gift torch need?
For everyday utility — a glovebox, a bag, a drawer — a moderate output with a sensible beam pattern beats a big number every time. Ask for beam distance and runtime alongside lumens; a torch with a modest output and a well-shaped beam is more useful than a bright one that floods a wall.
Why does our torch dim after a few minutes on the highest setting?
Thermal step-down. A small body cannot shed the heat that high output creates, so the driver reduces output to protect the LED. It is normal and usually desirable. Ask for the output level after thirty minutes if recipients will run the torch continuously.
Is IPX4 enough for Malaysian weather?
For most recipients, yes. IPX4 covers splashing from any direction, which is what rain and wet hands are. Choose IPX7 only if the torch will be used near water or drains, and treat any rating as a condition on delivery rather than a lifetime guarantee, because seals age.
Should we choose rechargeable or replaceable batteries?
