The Coil Under the Print: What a Wireless Charging Mousepad Costs You in Design and Paperwork

The most expensive component in a powered desk mat is a disc about the size of a drink coaster, and it decides where your logo is allowed to go. That is the part of the brief that catches buyers out. Everyone approves the idea of a charging mat in about ten seconds — it is the one desk gift that feels like technology. What nobody budgets for is that the coil claims prime real estate on the top face, dictates the material above it, adds a document trail your procurement team will ask about, and introduces something a plain mat does not have: a way to fail.

This is the honest brief for a wireless charging mousepad and for mixed-material desk mats generally — what the module does to your artwork, which materials it rules out, the questions to put to a supplier in writing, and the cases where a well-made plain mat is simply the better corporate gift. How a charging mat is actually built

Under the top face sits a transmitter module: a flat copper coil, a small circuit board, and usually a thin ferrite shield behind the coil to steer the magnetic field upwards and keep it out of the desk. A cable enters at the rear edge, typically USB-C, and an indicator light shows standby and charging states. The whole assembly is laminated between the face material and the base layer, which is why powered mats are almost always PU-faced: the module needs a flat, thin, stable layer above it, not a compressible pile.

Charging works by induction. The transmitter coil creates an alternating magnetic field; a matching coil in the phone converts it back to current. Everything that follows — the material rules, the artwork rules, the phone-case problem — comes from the fact that this field has to cross the top face of your mat without being absorbed, reflected or pushed too far away.

What the coil does to your artwork

Four constraints, and none of them are obvious until the first sample lands on the desk.

1. You must give up space to a charging-zone marker

The overwhelming majority of “it doesn’t charge” complaints are really “the phone was not on the coil”. A charging coil has a small sweet spot, and a featureless mat gives the user no way to find it. So the artwork has to carry a visual marker — a ring, a bracket, a subtle change of texture or tone — sized to the phone, not to the coil. That is a meaningful patch of your top face permanently committed to a functional graphic rather than to branding, and it is best placed at a corner so it does not collide with the area the mouse uses.

2. The module makes a low platform, and straight lines expose it

However well laminated, the assembly sits slightly proud of the surrounding material, and light raking across the mat reveals the outline. Any straight brand rule, fine grid or crisply aligned block of type crossing that boundary will look bent. Keep the charging area a clean field: a solid tone or a soft gradient, with no geometry running through it.

3. The indicator light needs somewhere to come through

Most modules use a light pipe or a translucent window in the face. Over a dark artwork field it is nearly invisible when off, which is what you want. Over a pale field it reads as a small blemish. Decide early whether the indicator sits inside the charging-zone graphic — where it looks intentional — or somewhere it will look like a flaw.

4. The cable exit fixes the mat’s orientation

The port sits on one edge, and the coil sits in one corner. Together they mean the mat has a correct way round. A right-handed user with the desk power on their left, or a left-handed user with the coil under their mouse hand, will find the mat awkward. Ask which corner the coil occupies and which edge takes the cable, then confirm the layout works for the desks you have surveyed — the same audit that governs extended mats on a shared hot desk.

Materials the coil rules out

  • No metal above the coil. A metal trim, a metal logo plate or a metal-edged inlay over the charging area will absorb the field, heat up and stop the charge. Move any metal detailing to the opposite side of the mat.
  • No metallic or pearlescent inks, and no foil blocking, in the charging zone. These finishes contain metal particles or a metallised layer. On a plain mat they are a lovely premium touch; over a coil they are a fault waiting to be reported.
  • Keep the face thin. Coupling falls away quickly with distance, so a thick plush cloth or a heavily padded face over the module reduces performance. This is the real reason powered mats are PU or thin fabric rather than the comfortable brushed cloth people expect.
  • Cork and felt are usually fine in the thin sheet weights used on desk mats, which is why cork-and-PU mixed builds are a popular way to keep an eco angle on a powered product.
  • Print method changes too. Powered mats are UV printed, debossed or engraved rather than dye sublimated, so the pale-tint behaviour is completely different from the colour shift against a black rubber base that governs a cloth pad.

The phone-case problem nobody mentions at quotation

Output tiers on desk-mat modules are usually quoted at 5 W, 10 W or 15 W. The headline figure matters far less than what sits between the coil and the phone.

A slim case is a non-issue. A thick rugged case, a wallet case with cards in it, a case with a metal plate for a car mount, or a ring holder or grip stuck to the back will all reduce or entirely block charging — and a card left inside a wallet case sitting on an active coil is a genuinely bad idea. In any group of 300 recipients, a real share will be carrying at least one of those, and a further share will be using a phone that does not support wireless charging at all.

Budget for the gap between “works” and “works for this recipient”. Before committing to a powered mat for a whole floor, ask one question in your staff survey or event registration form: does your phone charge wirelessly? If the answer is no for a substantial minority, a powered mat becomes a gift that visibly excludes people — and the excluded ones are the ones who talk about it.

The certification questions to put in writing

A plain mouse pad is a printed textile. A powered mat is an electrical product, and that changes what procurement, facilities and your own risk team will want to see. Send these questions to the supplier before you approve a sample, and keep the answers on file.

Two practical notes. Ask for the spares allowance to arrive with the main delivery rather than being promised later — replacements sourced months afterwards rarely match the original artwork run. And make sure your supplier invoices with SST handled correctly and the product described accurately, because an electrical item and a printed textile are not the same line on a purchase order, and a procurement officer who spots a mismatch will send the whole thing back.

When the upgrade is worth it — and when it is not

Here is the contrarian position, and we hold it after years of specifying both. A plain mat has no failure mode. A powered mat does. A well-made stitched cloth pad or a grained PU mat will still be doing its job in three years. A charging module that dies in month five turns your brand into the logo on a broken object that the recipient now has to decide whether to throw away. That asymmetry should drive the decision far more than the novelty does.

Mixed-material mats without the electronics

There is a middle tier worth knowing about, and it delivers most of the premium feel without any of the paperwork. A dual-surface mat pairs a PU or hard face on one side with felt or cloth on the other, so the user flips it depending on whether they want speed or control. A two-zone mat runs a smooth PU strip under the mouse and a softer band under the wrist. A cork-and-PU build carries an eco story and a premium finish at once.

On any bonded multi-layer mat, the edge is the thing to specify. A simple glued lamination will start to separate at a corner; a stitched perimeter or a proper heat-welded edge holds the layers together mechanically. It is also worth confirming how each face behaves under a mouse before you commit, since a dual-surface mat is only useful if both sides work — which brings you back to how PU and hard surfaces under a laser sensor actually perform.
