IPX4, IPX5 or IPX7: What Each Rating Actually Survives at a Family Day
“IPX7 — waterproof” is one of the most reassuring lines on a speaker quotation, and one of the most misunderstood. It does not mean the speaker is waterproof. It means one sample of that model, fresh from a factory, with every seal new and every flap closed, sat still in clean fresh water at a defined depth for half an hour and still worked. Every word in that sentence is doing work — and a family day at a poolside in Malaysia breaks about four of them at once.
This is a plain-language translation of the IP code as it applies to a branded speaker: what each rating is actually tested against, what that maps to in a real Malaysian event, and the four things that defeat a good rating in the first week. None of it is a reason to avoid a water-resistant model. It is a reason to specify the right one and to write the right sentence on the insert card.
What the letters mean — and what the X is hiding
The IP code is defined in the international standard IEC 60529 and takes the form IP followed by two characters. The first describes protection against solid objects — fingers, tools, dust. The second describes protection against water. So IP65 is dust-tight and protected against water jets.
An X in either position does not mean “no protection”. It means not tested, and that distinction matters commercially. IPX7 tells you a speaker survived immersion and tells you nothing at all about dust — which for a beach, a construction site launch or an outdoor sports day is arguably the more likely enemy. Fine sand works into grilles, buttons and charging ports, and a model that has never been dust-tested may be no better sealed against it than an unrated one. If the environment is dusty, ask whether an IP-rated first digit exists for that model; if the answer is no, plan for it in the packaging and the wording instead.
One more subtlety that catches buyers out: the water ratings are only partly cumulative. A device rated for immersion is not automatically certified against high-pressure jets, because those are different tests measuring different things. Products that genuinely pass both carry a dual marking such as IPX5/IPX7. A single IPX7 claim does not promise the speaker will shrug off a hose or a hard poolside shower.
The tests, translated into things that actually happen
Here is the laboratory definition next to the Malaysian scene it honestly covers. The test conditions are from the standard; the right-hand columns are our own translation, based on what these products come back from events having survived — and not survived.

Test parameters per IEC 60529. IPX8 has no fixed depth in the standard — the manufacturer defines it, which is why two IPX8 products can mean very different things.
Read that table once and the shopping decision usually makes itself. For most Malaysian corporate use — a covered event space, a desk, a car, the walk from the car park in an afternoon downpour — IPX4 to IPX5 is the honest requirement. IPX7 is for water the speaker might actually fall into.
The charging flap is the entire rating
Almost every water-resistant speaker in this class seals its charging port behind a small rubber flap. The IP rating was achieved with that flap closed and correctly seated. Open, the speaker is unrated — a hole straight to the circuit board.
This is the single most common cause of a “waterproof” gift failing, and it is a design question you can ask before you order. A captive flap moulded into the body is far better than a loose plug that gets lost. A magnetic or pogo-pin charging contact removes the problem entirely and is worth asking about on rugged models. And whichever it is, the insert card should say so in one plain line — “close the charging cover before use near water” — because the person unwrapping it has never seen the datasheet.
Chlorine, sea water and sunscreen were never in the test
The IP water tests use clean fresh water. That is not a loophole; it is what makes results comparable between laboratories. But it means three very common Malaysian scenarios sit outside what the rating certifies.
- Chlorinated pool water is chemically harder on rubber seals and printed graphics than tap water. A speaker that lives at a pool ages faster than the rating implies.
- Sea water adds salt, which corrodes charging contacts and grille meshes and does not evaporate. Rinsing with fresh water afterwards genuinely matters, and is worth putting on the card for any beach-themed campaign.
- Sunscreen and insect repellent are solvents as far as some plastics and inks are concerned. Greasy fingerprints on a printed logo at a family day are not a printing defect — they are chemistry, and they are the reason we push engraved or under-coat decoration on models destined for outdoor use.
A survived speaker can still sound wrong
There is a difference between “the electronics still work” and “it sounds the way it did yesterday”. The IP rating protects the first. It says nothing about the second.
Water that gets into the grille and sits against the driver diaphragm damps it, and the speaker goes muffled and quiet until it dries out. On a passive-radiator model, trapped water also detunes the low end, which is why a dunked speaker can sound both dull and oddly boomy for an hour. The fix is simply patience: shake it out with the grille facing down, leave it in moving air, and do not charge it until the port is completely dry — that last point matters more than the drying time, because a wet charging contact is where real damage happens. It is also why we suggest recipients avoid setting a speaker directly on wet tiles, where it will happily wick water in through the grille while never being “immersed” at all. A rating is a factory-fresh claim, not a lifetime guarantee
Seals age. A rubber gasket that has been compressed for a year takes a set and stops springing back; one that has been through repeated heating and cooling in a car boot ages faster still. A single drop onto a hard edge can distort a housing joint by a fraction of a millimetre — invisible, and enough. None of this is covered by the certificate, which describes a new sample.
The practical consequence for a corporate order is about storage rather than use. Speakers held in an unconditioned storeroom through a Malaysian year, waiting for a distribution date, are ageing their seals and their battery at the same time. Order to a distribution date rather than to a budget deadline where you can. Which rating for which Malaysian occasion
- Office desk gift, delegate bag, Hari Raya or Chinese New Year client gift. No rating needed. Spend the money on the sound and the box instead. If a rating is available at no cost, IPX4 is a sensible free extra for the monsoon walk across a car park.
- Family day, sports day, Merdeka carnival, outdoor team-building. IPX5. It covers rain and splashing, which is what actually happens, and it does not carry the price and bulk of a sealed rugged body.
- Poolside, beach, boat, watersports brand. IPX7, ideally with a captive flap or contact charging, and a rinse instruction on the card. Ask whether it floats — many do not, and a sinking IPX7 speaker is still a lost speaker.
- Site, plantation, logistics and field teams. Ask for a first digit as well as a second — dust is the real adversary — plus a rubber-overmoulded body. Expect a heavier product and plan the decoration around it, since those surfaces print differently, as we explain in the decoration map for rubberised and fabric housings.
What to ask a supplier before you accept a waterproof claim
Four questions, in writing, before artwork approval:
- Which exact rating, and is it a single rating or a dual marking such as IPX5/IPX7?
- Is there a test report, from which laboratory, and does it name this model rather than a family of models?
- How is the charging port sealed — captive flap, loose plug, or contact charging?
- Does the decoration method we have chosen sit outside the sealed area, or over it?
If a supplier can answer all four, the claim is probably sound. If they can answer none, treat the rating as marketing and specify to the tier below it. We ask these on every rugged model before it goes into the IPX-rated models in our speaker custom collection.
Questions buyers ask us about waterproof speakers
Is IPX7 better than IPX5?
For immersion, yes. For jets and hoses, not automatically — those are separate tests, and a speaker needs a dual marking to claim both. Choose by the water your recipients will actually meet rather than by the higher number.
Can we take an IPX7 speaker into the swimming pool?
It should survive a drop and a retrieval, which is what the rating describes. Living in the pool is different: chlorine ages seals, and most models do not float. Treat it as insurance against an accident, not as a swimming accessory.
Does a waterproof model limit our branding?
It changes it rather than limiting it. Sealed and overmoulded bodies favour engraving and printing on flat panels away from seams and gaskets, and we confirm the exact area on your digital mockup. Radio performance is worth checking on the same sample, alongside pairing range and speakerphone features worth specifying.
Should the water advice go on the packaging?
Yes, and it costs nothing. One line about closing the charging cover and one about rinsing after sea water prevents most avoidable failures — and it reads as care rather than as a disclaimer.
