Dri-Fit Is a Trademark, Not a Spec: How to Test a Performance Shirt Before You Order

A buyer sends us a shirt from a previous supplier and asks us to match it. The neck label says Dri Fit. That label tells us the colour, roughly the weight, and absolutely nothing else — because “Dri-FIT” is a registered Nike trademark, not a fabric specification, and in the Malaysian promotional trade it has drifted into a generic word meaning “a polyester tee”. Two shirts can both be sold to you as dri-fit, cost different amounts, and behave completely differently at 8am on a Saturday in Shah Alam.

So this is not a definition. It is the bench test our production team runs when a sample lands on the desk, written out so you can run it yourself before committing an order. You need a glass of water, a fan, scissors, a cotton tee as a control, and twenty minutes. At the end is the spec list we wish buyers would send instead of the word “dri-fit” — because once you can describe the cloth properly, dri fit shirt printing in Malaysia stops being a guessing game.

The one-line version

Polyester does not absorb water at all. Wicking is something a mill engineers into the yarn shape and the knit structure — or sprays on as a finish that washes away. The tests below tell you which one you have been quoted.

Cotton drinks. Polyester carries.

The two fibres handle sweat by completely different physics, and the difference is worth understanding because it explains every complaint you will ever receive about a performance shirt.

Cotton is hydrophilic. Its cellulose takes water into the fibre. The standard textile figure for cotton’s moisture regain is around 8 per cent; for polyester it is roughly 0.4 per cent. That is why a soaked cotton tee turns heavy, cold and clinging and stays that way for hours — the water is inside the fibre, and the only way out is slow evaporation.

Polyester is hydrophobic. Water does not go into the fibre because there is nowhere for it to go. Instead, moisture travels through the narrow channels between the filaments, pulled along by surface tension in exactly the way liquid climbs up a paper towel. That is capillary action, and it is the whole mechanism. Sweat is drawn off the skin, spread out across a wide area of cloth, and presented to the air as a thin film with a lot of surface — which is why it evaporates fast and why the fabric never feels waterlogged.

Here is the part almost nobody tells a corporate buyer. Because polyester repels water by nature, a polyester shirt that has not been engineered to wick is worse than cotton, not better. Sweat beads on it, runs down the back, and pools where the fabric touches skin. The wearer describes it as “plasticky” and “clammy” — those are not vague complaints, they are an accurate description of a hydrophobic knit with no capillary structure. If a sample feels like that, it is not a cheap version of the right thing. It is the wrong thing.

Three things make one polyester knit wick and another one not

1. How fine the filaments are

A yarn spun from many very fine filaments has far more filament surface, and far more of the narrow gaps between filaments, than a yarn of the same weight made from a few thick ones. More gaps means more capillaries. This is what the word “microfibre” is actually pointing at, and it is why a 160gsm microfibre knit can move more moisture than a heavier, coarser polyester at the same weight.

2. The shape of the filament itself

Ordinary polyester is extruded round. Performance polyester is often extruded through a shaped spinneret so each filament carries grooves running down its length — cross-shaped, four-channel, scalloped. Those grooves are dedicated wicking channels cut into the fibre. This is a mill-level decision made before the yarn is ever knitted, and no finish applied later can substitute for it.

3. Whether the yarn is textured

Flat, smooth filament yarn packs together tightly and leaves little space. Textured or bulked yarn is crimped so the filaments hold each other apart, opening up the space that does the transport — and stopping the fabric sticking flat to wet skin.

The knit structure is the other half of the answer

Yarn moves moisture. Structure decides where it goes and how much air gets to it. The three knits we quote most often on performance shirts do genuinely different jobs:

Micro-polyester interlock Dense, closed, identical on both faces. Smooth hand, stable edges, an even printing surface with no visible holes. Corporate shirts where the logo must sit crisp and the shirt must photograph well.
Honeycomb / bird-eye mesh Raised geometry holds most of the cloth off the skin and leaves open cells for air exchange. Moisture spreads sideways into the ribs. Anything worn while genuinely sweating — runs, sports days, outdoor crew.
Performance pique Textured cellular surface with more body. Holds its shape at the placket and collar instead of curling. Collared performance shirts for roadshows and client-facing outdoor work.

The advanced version of this is a two-face or “push-pull” construction: the inner face knitted from a hydrophobic yarn that refuses to hold water, the outer face from a more absorbent one, so moisture is actively driven outward rather than left sitting against the skin. If you are paying for genuine performance rather than a polyester tee, this is the construction to ask about by name.

Finish or fibre? The question that separates two identical-looking shirts

There is a shortcut, and it is extremely common. Instead of buying engineered yarn, a mill can run ordinary polyester through a hydrophilic softener during finishing, and the fabric then passes a drop test beautifully on day one. The finish is topical, it sits on the fibre surface, and laundering takes it off — with fabric softener, which most Malaysian households use as a matter of course, stripping it faster.

Six months later the shirts your staff still own no longer wick, and nobody can explain why. Nothing failed. The finish simply left. Intrinsic wicking — filament shape plus knit structure — cannot leave, because it is geometry rather than chemistry.

Ask this in writing

“Is the wicking intrinsic to the yarn and knit, or is it a topical finish? If it is a finish, how many domestic washes is the performance rated to, and under what wash method?” A mill that engineered the cloth answers instantly. A trader reselling a generic knit will not answer at all.

The twenty-minute bench test

Laboratories measure this properly with vertical strip and horizontal spreading methods. You do not need a laboratory to separate a good knit from a bad one — you need a control. Cut a spare cotton tee into strips and test the two side by side, because every judgement below is comparative.

Test How to run it What a pass looks like
1. The drop test Lay the shirt flat, unstretched. Drop a single drop of water onto the body panel from a few centimetres. Watch it. The drop sinks in and spreads within a few seconds. If it sits as a bead, the knit is hydrophobic with no wicking at all. If it sinks but does not spread, it absorbs rather than transports.
2. The climb test Cut a strip about two centimetres wide from the hem. Hang it so the bottom edge just touches water in a glass. Mark how far the water has climbed after five minutes. Repeat with the cotton strip. A performance knit climbs visibly and evenly, with a straight wetting front. A patchy, ragged front means uneven yarn or a finish applied unevenly.
3. The drying race Wet the same size patch on both shirts, squeeze out by hand equally, hang both under the same fan and time them to touch-dry. The polyester should be dramatically ahead of cotton, not marginally. A shirt that only just beats cotton is not doing its job in a Malaysian afternoon.
4. The five-wash repeat Wash the sample five times in an ordinary domestic machine with normal detergent and no fabric softener. Then run test 1 again. Identical behaviour to the first drop test. A drop that now beads where it previously sank tells you the wicking was a finish, and it is leaving.

Test four is the one that matters and the one nobody runs, because it takes a week rather than a minute. It is also the only test that predicts how the shirt behaves in month six. Run it before you commit, not after — and run it on the same panel you intend to decorate, because how a print behaves on a stretch knit changes what that panel can do afterwards.

Write this instead of the word “dri-fit”

An enquiry that contains these nine lines gets a mockup and an accurate quotation in about one business day. An enquiry that says “300 dri-fit shirts with our logo” takes three rounds of questions to reach the same place.

  • Fibre composition — 100% microfibre polyester, or a quick-dry cotton-rich blend, and the exact split.
  • Weight in gsm — a light 160gsm knit and a 200gsm blend are different garments for different jobs.
  • Knit structure — interlock, honeycomb / bird-eye mesh, or performance pique.
  • Wicking basis — intrinsic yarn and knit, or a topical finish with a stated wash rating.
  • Style and fit — round-neck, collared, long-sleeve, raglan, ladies-fit.
  • Colour — and whether you want a full-coverage design, which constrains the base colour.
  • Decoration — method, number of colours, placement and print dimensions.
  • Quantity and size breakdown — our minimum order is from 300 pcs, and the size split affects the cutting plan.
  • The date the shirts must be in the room — not the date you want them shipped.

Test the pre-production sample, not the showroom sample

A showroom sample has been handled by hundreds of people and may come from a different production year to the cloth that will be cut for you. The sample worth testing is the pre-production sample made from your fabric, in your colour, with your decoration on it. Run the bench test on that, then keep a second retained sample in a drawer as an agreed reference if anything is queried on delivery.

Build the clock into your plan. Production runs 20–30 working days after artwork approval depending on quantity and style, plus around 15 days shipping nationwide, with a 7-working-day express route on limited styles and quantities. Sampling sits in front of all of that, so a buyer who wants to test properly needs to start earlier.

Two other things are worth deciding at sample stage rather than after delivery, because both are properties of the same cloth: what a soaked performance tee looks like at the finish line, and why the same polyester that dries fast also holds odour. A shirt can pass every wicking test and still fail on both.

Your questions, answered

Is dri-fit a fabric or a brand?

Dri-FIT is a Nike trademark. As used across the Malaysian promotional trade it has become a generic label for moisture-wicking polyester, which is why it carries no guaranteed specification. Buy on fibre, gsm, knit structure and wicking basis instead.

Does a higher gsm wick better?

No. Gsm is weight per square metre, not performance. A heavier knit holds more moisture in total and takes longer to dry; a lighter engineered knit often moves sweat faster. Weight buys opacity, durability and a more substantial feel — not wicking.

Can a cotton-polyester blend wick?

Partly. The polyester component still transports moisture, but the cotton component absorbs and holds it, so drying is slower and the shirt gains more weight when soaked. Blends are a reasonable compromise for all-day wear in a shaded setting; they are the wrong choice for a run.

Our last batch stopped wicking after a few months. What happened?

Most often a topical hydrophilic finish that has washed out, accelerated by fabric softener coating the fibre. It is not repairable on the garment. It is avoidable at specification stage by buying intrinsic wicking, and it is detectable at sample stage with the five-wash repeat test above.
